The Lymphatic System The Lymphatic System consists of tissues and organs such as the tonsils, thymus, lymph nodes, lymph glands, lymphatic vessels, spleen, Peyer’s Patches (found in the small intestine), appendix, bone marrow and lymph. These are the states of the lymphatic system when it is in a healthy state. The lymphatic system works with the immune system in providing the body protection from harmful diseases and infections. The lymphatic system regulates interstitial fluid protein. Its function is not to produce erythrocytes however to dispose of them. Lymphatic system What is it? What does it do? Lymphatic Filariasis (also commonly known as Elephantiasis) is a disease that is caused by thread-like worms. Adult worms are most commonly found in the human lymphatic system. It causes the affected area – mostly the legs, arms, breasts or genital areas – to brutal and abnormal swelling which also makes the skin covering the area become more exposed to bacteria. This makes the skin hard and thick: the condition has been named as Elephantiasis. In most cases the affected person does not show any symptoms of the disorder. Elephantiasis is a long-term disorder that causes many people to have a permanent disability. The condition is more common around tropical locations. There are 856 million people constantly threatened by the disease. It is a discarded issue as it isn’t affecting any developed countries however that does not change the fact that more than 100 million people are disfigured due to this horrid condition. The condition brings irritation to a person and does not allow them to have the freedom of movement. It restricts and limits a person to certain movements.
