When I was in seventh grade, my parents asked me whether I wanted to go to a boarding school in India. Without any hesitation I accepted their offer. Only after I got there did I realized that immersion into another culture requires indulgence and a thoughtful perception. My time in India not only made me aware on my social demeanor, but also it taught me the value of decision making. Even though I experienced instances of pain when I was misunderstood and embarrassed, I improved my personality by learning not fear to gain knowledge through equitable questions, keen listening and an open mind. I took my parent’s offer in mere fascination of experimentation. My experimentation showed me the importance of humanity, when I recognized the struggle underprivileged classes have to face to get adequate healthcare facilities in India. This issue is also prevalent in developed countries like the United States, where certain ethnic groups and low income families find it difficult to receive proper medical care. I volunteer at Central Dupage Hospital’s gift shop, I found it difficult at first to wrap gifts. I tried to wrap as fast as I can, but it ended up being uncouth. Later I analyzed that, my wrapping ability is inhibited by my conscious more than my skill. When I was given a gift to wrap, I had these qualms about my potential to satisfy the customer. After gift wrapping for a long time, my qualms have been replaced with confidence and passion for my job. I gift wrap items to make it look beautiful and to bring a smile into the patient who receives it, rather than fearing about the customer’s opinion. My experience at the gift shop, has changed my perspective of life. I learnt that life can be beautiful only when you own it with passion and love for what you are
