Is gentrification occurring in Main South? What would indicators of gentrification be? I believe that gentrification is occurring in Main South because the area is being upgraded in terms of the quality of housing, and the goal of upgrading the housing is to bring people back into Worcester to live there. Indicators of gentrification in that neighborhood would be a large increase in terms of the population of people living in Main South, and a large increase in the median household income of the Main South community. If you were to conduct a project to study the causes of gentrification in a neighborhood, what indicators would you measure to test the relevance of production vz consumption approaches? Rent gaps cause gentrification because developers can then come in and upgrade the housing in an area and watch the prices skyrocket to cause profit. A consumer/consumption explanation of gentrification claims that the consumption patterns of the workforce have changed on their own. The difference between these two explanations is that one of them claims that gentrification is systematic and the other claims that it is impossible to predict where gentrification will occur. The rent gap explanation of gentrification holds more merit because it explains gentrification as a result of systems in place within the government, and historically, the government has systematically targeted minority groups for societal reasons. Those minorities include, but are not limited to: blacks, hispanics, Jews, Muslims, South Americans, and Asians. Blacks have been targeted since before the Civil War as they were enslaved with the only justification being, “We are white and that means we can exploit you and enslave you”. Blacks then had to fight off Jim Crow laws which targeted them because of their skin color.
