Not everyone has a distinguishable moment in their life when they uncover their true calling and I am living proof of that statement. Growing up, I wanted to become a forensic scientist; that dream changed when I took general chemistry in high school. I fell in love with the subject because it made me think about the complexities of the world around us. Three more chemistry courses and one anatomy course later, I decided I wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy. Believe it or not, it was not just the classes that made me fall in love with the idea of being a pharmacist. My short-term goals in pharmacy include getting a job in retail pharmacy and applying my education to a real-world setting. I have developed an interest in both retail pharmacy and nuclear pharmacy, but I am leaning towards retail pharmacy because of the myriad of accessible locations. A Doctor of Pharmacy degree will certainly open doors for me in the world of employment. My long-term goals include furthering my education in the field of pharmacy, to establish a name for myself, and also to build a connection with the patient. Through my degree, I aim towards furthering my knowledge about medications and learning how to effectively assist others in their pursuit of health. The way medications are made and interact with the human body is one of the interests that inspired me to pursue pharmacy as a career. At Walgreens, the pharmacist is able to inform patients about how a medication works and also has established connections with all of the incoming patients. Because I am an extrovert by nature, I am able to have a conversation with anyone without fumbling over my words. When one has exceptional social skills, patients feel more at ease because they feel as if they are talking to someone familiar who is genuinely concerned for their well-being instead of a complete stranger. Through my pharmacy education, I will be able to fully inform patients that have questions about a type of medicine. Not everyone is comfortable with taking medication, but knowledge of that prescription will leave the consumer with a sound mind and ease their nerves. I personally have witnessed patients who were not comfortable taking their medication due to the fact they did not fully understand what they were ingesting and why that particular drug was necessary. To overcome this, the pharmacist I was working with at the time informed the patient of the medication’s use and any side effects it may cause along with any information to help prevent those side effects. The knowledge I will receive about medication combined with my social skills will be very helpful when it comes to assisting patients with their medical needs. I aim to grant my patients unrivaled personal attention that will build a connection between them and me and make them want to come back to the pharmacy I work at. This furthers my most important goal in the field of pharmacy
