A Career For Me
When I grow up I want to be a pediatric cardio thoracic surgeon.In case you were unaware, this is what the occupation means. Pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons perform cardiac and thoracic, which is another word for chest, surgery predominantly in children, although they may do surgery on adult patients with congenital cardiac disease. Congenital heart disease means that the person was born with something structurally abnormal or seriously wrong with their hearts. Pediatric cardio thoracic surgeons also perform heart and lung transplants and place mechanical circulatory assist devices in children with weakened hearts. This career requires many years of education and training, as well as a life commitment to the work of performing these tasks.
You may wonder why I would want to pursue this career. My parents are both pharmacists, and they constantly encourage me to pursue a career in the medical field because there is never a shortage of work. To become a surgeon, you have to complete a four year pre-medicine degree, followed by four years of medical school. Then, a five year residency in general surgery, with an additional two to three years of a cardiothoracic residency program, and finally, between two to four years of additional training for pediatric patients. That is a long time to be in school! I also found in my research that the average salary for a pediatric cardio thoracic surgeon is $760,000 a year. I began my college career unsure of the path ahead of me. I knew I had a passion for medicine, however, I did not know which direction I would take. With the expansive amount of options offered within the fields of science and medicine, it was difficult to narrow down exactly what direction I wanted to take. I gained some clarity the summer of my sophomore year when I stayed at a close friend’s home, whose father, a practicing Medical Physician, became somewhat of a mentor to me. The passionate way in which he discussed the practice of medicine led me to develop an interest in pursuing a career as a physician. First I would like to state that any career in a medical field takes a lot of dedication and many hours studying and it is not for everyone. I would also like to say once an individual has made a career out of it the job has long hours and can be very stressful, so I suggest readers to not consider a career in medicine unless you are genuinely interested in the work, and are not in it just for the money.
There are a lot of reasons why I chose to pursue pharmacy as my career and they all point to the most important reason: pharmacy is a great fit for my life and is something I have become increasingly passionate about. It started when I was researching careers with my parents and my dad suggested pharmacy and, simply put, it sparked my interest because at the time it was one of the few things I thought I would not hate doing. A healthcare career has always been where I put myself in the future, mainly because most of my family members are in the healthcare field. However, I have never been one that could directly help the wounded or deal with anything gory, but am very intrigued by the growing science of pharmacy. Cardiology is an extremely competitive area of education, meaning only the best of the best area taken into consideration. With this being said, in order to be the best you must be taught by the best, who can be found at the most prestigious universities. I have always wanted to work in the medical field since I was a child. Around four, I told my pediatrician during a well- check visit that I wanted to grow up and be just like her. My love of infants and children strongly influenced my career choice because I want to have the ability to help sick children who do not have the ability to help themselves. I have considered many options to enter the healthcare field from nurse, to doctor, and finally came to the conclusion that what I truly wanted out of my future resided in a career as a Physician Assistant. Becoming a PA is not something that I have considered lightly.
My future career goal is to become an anesthesiologist. An anesthesiologist administers an anesthetic to patients before going into surgery. They also have to keep monitor of vital life signs and make sure everything in the body is functioning properly while under the anesthetic. I think being an anesthesiologist is something I’d enjoy being because I like being in control. I like making sure people are okay and that is specifically what anesthesiologists do; they make sure the patient can’t feel any pain and is comfortable during surgery.
I have known from an early age that I’ve wanted to become a doctor. Helping people has always been a passion of mine. When I was younger, I wanted to be a veterinarian. However, after working with young children I have found that I love working with them, and have a connection with children. Currently, I am interested in becoming either a neonatologist or a general pediatrician so I can continue to work with young children.

Young I was given a lot of time to think about why I wanted to peruse a profession in pharmacy. I could honestly see my self helping someone day to day and learning new faces while getting to know some of your regulars that may come to the store every week for a prescription. As soon as I became employed as a youth counselor I found myself enjoying the smiles on kids faces when they see you, knowing you make a difference in their life, and as a pharmacist you can usually pick out what is wrong with your regular customers and when they see that someone notices a difference in their gestures they will know that honestly enjoy and partake your job seriously. While pharmacy is a ever changing field, being able to be there while new medicines are being discovered to cure many deadly diseases would be one experience inly so many could say they participated in. With a Doctor of Pharmacy degree there is much more than just being behind the counter. You can have so many job tittles that your degree allows you to have it’s like beginning a new journey when you begin job searching. The career that I want to pursue after high school is surgery. More specifically, reconstructive plastic surgery. I want to do facial constructive surgery for children born with a cleft lip and palate. In addition to that, I want to perform reconstructive surgery on burn victims. I chose this career field because I was born with a cleft lip and palate, and know firsthand the impact a good surgeon can have on someone 's life. It is important to understand the education or training requirements, skills or talents needed, salary and benefits offered, and the duties for a particular career when making this decision.
With so many jobs in the world it’s so hard to choose just one. Do you want to be an athlete or a doctor? You have to decide wisely because once you choose turning back is a difficult task. Being a surgeon is the job I want to have as an adult. Being a surgeon may be hard but in the long run it’s worth it. This career caught my attention as a kid. I would always watch these ER shows and see these crazy tasks that they would have to deal with, and through all that they’d be calm and collective. Seeing a surgeon save someone’s life inspires me to want to do the same thing. If I would have the ability to save someone’s life, it would allow me to see the world in a whole new way. Every year more than 15 million people in the U.S. have surgery. That being said the need for surgeons will never decrease, as there always will be a surgery to perform. A surgeon is always on call everyday of the year, they need to be able to perform under some of the most pressures situations. In the future, I hope to pursue my career dream of becoming a pediatrician. Pediatricians can be identified individuals who specialize in giving medical care to children and adolescents between infancy to adulthood at eighteen years of age. I became inspired to become a pediatrician due to my immense love of children. Perhaps I have an innate intuition for taking care of people being that I have always felt that I excel at taking care of others. The idea of taking care of others truly makes me feel that I serve a purpose, not only to better the life of myself but the life of others. Therefore, I believe that becoming a pediatrician will help me combine the best of both worlds into a career that I adore and cherish.
A career I have learned a lot about over the years and have become fascinated with is pharmacy. I chose pharmacy because I find it interesting and a job that helps a lot of people. My aunt has been a pharmacist for many years and has left a positive impact on many peoples lives. Moreover, my sister is completing her last year of pharmacy school and will officially be a pharmacist in May. However, my great uncle has played a huge role in the development of pharmacy and has received many awards because of it. Pharmacists play an important role in peoples lives, which is why I find it so appealing. I like how pharmacists help others and teach people how to take medications. Pharmacists truly help the sick to feel better.
