Daylight savings was first implemented in the United States in 1918 to conserve resources for the war effort. Since then, Americans have been consistently setting their clocks forward and back to maximize the amount of sunlight they can utilize per day. Daylight savings time is a waste of money in America and the government should at least consider discontinuing its use. Daylight savings time is misunderstood by most everyone, and is more confusing than helpful. For years after its debut, states were allowed to choose whether or not they wanted to participate, and many chose not to, creating a gap in time zones across not each region, but each state. In 2007, a study was done that showed that residents of Indiana paid $8.6 million more each year for energy, and that air pollution increased after the state switched to daylight savings time. Daylight savings has proved to be dangerous as well. Several studies have shown in increase in pedestrian fatalities and car accidents the week after daylight savings, because of the abrupt change in time and people's inability to adjust quickly to such a large change. One study showed an increase of 162 pedestrian fatalities from cars from the week before daylight savings to the week after. Anxiety is common in America, and can be easily aggravated by daylight savings. The fear of forgetting to change the clock or being late to something important as a result of not changing the clock can turn into constant worry and be unhealthy. Also, people with memory loss, such as those who have had accidents or have early stages of Alzheimer’s, have trouble remembering to change their clocks which can have negative effects on their work and home
