Trends in Dating
Think about how your grandparents met; was it at a job they both worked at? Then think how your parents met, through their friend group? Now, how do you plan to meet your soulmate? Over the past ten years, dating has done a complete 360-degree turn. A study done on Americans by the Pew Research Center found, “66% of online daters have gone on a date with someone they met through a dating site or app, and 23% of online daters say they have met a spouse or long term relationship through these sites (Smith and Duggan).” From a boy asking a girl’s parents permission to date their daughter, to today when people resort to dating apps and websites like, Okcupid or Tinder. The uses of these dating sites and apps have greatly inclined. In 2008, only three percent of Americans used an online dating site now that has increased to nine percent (Ambrose and Palm). Choosing a mate in the comfort of your home is very convenient but the only way to do that is through online or popular dating apps. According to the Washington Post, “Judging what someone else looks like first is not an attribute of technology; it’s an attribute of how we look at people. Dating, both modern and not, is a fairly superficial endeavor. (Ferdman)” Society, in general, is superficial because we base our first instinct off someone’s appearance and rate him or her to our own liking. This is another reason people are gravitating towards using apps like Tinder or websites where an individual can select their own partner, similar enough to how we order out. We make selections on what appeals to our eyes and since society gives us options, we embrace them. Similar to how we grocery shop, we choose the brand that best suits our needs and us. This is how we are also selecting our soul
