Being “good” at mathematics is a relative term when speaking with some people. For example, some people may consider a person a “good” mathematician if they can work through problems without a calculator. Yet some may consider “good” as someone who can decipher complicated, high-level thinking challenges with a high level of accuracy. As it relates to me, I fall in between both definitions of good from the ones I just shared above. Most mathematics type problems, I can do mentally and I do have the capabilities to be successful on complex problems. I would not consider myself Russell Crowe from A Beautiful Mind, but I can usually hold my own when working on tasks.
The type of mathematics I like to work on are typically data sets and manipulating numbers. I seem to enjoy doing this type of mathematics because it is fun to work through puzzles they are presented with. Another reason I like this math is because of how powerful of a story numbers can tell. For example, I was able to use the data from a baseball tryout for the last team I coached, and determine my team. There was very little backlash from the players who got cut, …show more content…

McKellar (2009) brilliantly shares an effective way to think about isolating variables through using inverse operations. She explains all operations are like wrapped presents. One operation let say addition, wraps the present, while subtraction unwraps the present (p. 166-167). Every operation that is used has an inverse that will undue the previous operation. Adding this explanation to the unknown number discussion will complete the process and ensure all learners needs have been met. Along with the inverse operations process, students will learn to picture the equation on a balance. When one inverse operation is done to one side, must be done to the other side in order to keep the equation
