Why choose to become a veterinarian?
An anonymous person once said, “Passion is the difference between having a job or having a career”. Everyone has something that they are passionate about whether small or large. This passion should correlate in with the job/career you have later in life. People who enjoy animals, for instance, may become a veterinarian. A veterinarian is a medical professional who protects the health and well-being of animals. Not only do they help animals, but they can support the environment, too. In numerous cases, veterinarians can even save your pet’s life. When choosing this career, there are many factors that can impact your decision like the education needed, hours and salary, and the work environment.

Choosing to become a veterinarian means that you have to put up with working in different environments. Going into further detail about the work environment, www. sites.tufts.edu states, “Not all veterinarians work in a traditional clinic setting. Veterinarians who treat horses and other livestock must travel between their offices and farms or ranches. They work outdoors in all kinds of weather and may have to perform surgery, often under unsanitary conditions. Those working in food safety and inspection also travel to farms, or even slaughterhouses and food-processing plants. Some veterinarians choose to conduct research, and work in a laboratory or office. These veterinarians spend little time working with animals. Veterinarians’ work can sometimes be emotionally stressful, as they deal with sick animals and anxious owners. The workplace can also become noisy due to sick or distressed animals. When working with animals that are frightened or in pain, veterinarians risk being bitten, kicked, or scratched”. Many individuals who choose to become a vet cannot handle the different physical and/or emotional challenges that come with the responsibilities of caring for sickened animals. Equine veterinarians are animal doctors who provide medical care for horses. They examine, test and occasionally operate on or euthanize the animals. Travel to ranches and farms is often necessary, and equine vets have to work outdoors in various types of weather conditions. Being an equine veterinarian is a pleasant career choice because of great interactions with varied types of horses and their owners , the basic information, and the pros and cons of an equine veterinarian.
For as long as I can remember, my childhood dream has always been wanting to become a veterinarian. While other kids were outside having fun at the playground, I was at the library reading books and learning about the different animals. However, as I matured, I realized that being a veterinarian isn’t just about caring for and assisting injured animals. Being a veterinarian means having the ability to make quick decisions in stressful situations, showing complete dedication and passion to this profession, and being able to effectively communicate to pet owners.
The drawbacks of being a large animal veterinarian are the stress, and dangers. You might find that working as a large animal veterinarian is stressful. This might be because you are holding a life in your hands. You cannot mess up an operation, or give out the wrong medication. That could mean the animals life or its death. In this career there are dangers. These include working with dangerous chemicals, getting injured by an animal, and working with dangerous tools.
Employment for veterinarians is expected to increase by twelve percent by 2022 (“Veterinarians: Career”). As they first start off at a hospital or clinic they make on average forty thousand to sixty thousand depending on what size preference (small or large) animals they work with (“How Much”). Veterinarian 's salary is that high because of their duties; they are to examine the animals’, diagnose and treat the animals, dress wounds, perform surgery, test and vaccinate the animals, operate the machinery needed, give advice to owners, write prescriptions; fill them, and do euthanizations. Working with animals is not the only part of their duties they have to continue to work on being compassionate,their decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, management skills, manual dexterity, and their problem-solving skills. While the veterinarians are working they are trying to improve on the public health by diagnosing, treating, researching on illnesses for all types of animals (“Veterinarians: Career”). As veterinarians give vaccinations and do regular check-ups they prevent some of the complications the animal can acquire. When I was growing up and always playing with animals, I realized what I might want to do with my life. Since animals are, for the most part, vulnerable and helpless, they need someone to take care of them. For animals in need to survive and carry on, there must be a caring person willing to take time out of their day to care for these animals. This person is responsible for providing care such as feeding, cleaning, giving water and administering medication to animals in veterinary offices, zoos, laboratories or animal hospitals. This person is called a veterinary assistant (Writer).
Many of my friends pick their careers based on money and trade skills that they have. I am proficient in art and design, but didn’t feel like that was what I wanted to do for my career. Your career shapes a huge portion of your life. It is what you do every day, for a large portion of your life. It is what I have prepared for the past 12 or so years of my life. It is way more than just money or a skill. I wanted to do something unique, something interesting, something that would inspire me to be a better human, something that would make me feel, something that is challenging, something that helped others, and above all, something that was rewarding and made me feel fulfilled.
My search for a career began when, as a college freshman, I chose neuroscience as my major. Surprisingly, this became the starting point for my veterinary career. It opened doors to exciting research and medical opportunities, including a short-lived interest in human medicine. My father being a gastroenterologist, human medicine represented a familiar and respectable career path. As a result, I shadowed several human medicine specialists. Although I did not find it as appealing as animal medicine, I discovered empathy for people and the desire to make a difference in both human and animal lives.
“The most successful Veterinary Technicians are passionate about the animals that they see on a daily basis and be able to control their emotions” (Career Cruising). The care of animals is very important so they don’t feel threatened by the Veterinary Technician and claw, bite, or growl at them. Veterinary Technicians must show their love of animals to the patients and their owners. many animals will feel the emotions that people give off and the animal can react to that emotion in a good or in a bad case bad. A Vet Technicians job is to be calm and not show emotions to the patient and family so the family won’t have emotional distress towards the clinic.
I believe as a veterinary technician I will be faced with many challenges and heartache on a daily basis. I will be introduced to situations that can be hard to bare--seeing animals that show the typical signs and symptoms of malnourishment and abuse. Having to unfortunately euthanize or observe euthanization of an animal due to a chronic illness or financial reasons by the caregiver(s)(“owner”). I will also vaccinate and administer medications to an animal under a veterinarian’s order and supervision. I will perform alongside the veterinarian with examinations and obtain bodily fluids such as blood, urine, or feces for further diagnosis. I will be present in observing and aiding an animal in need of medical assistance. I will fortunately be there to witness an animal walking on “all fours” along the path to their successful recovery. As a veterinary technician my purpose will be to allow the patient to feel and look healthy. I would love to see the caregivers’ faces change from concerned to relieved and thankful. I realize as a veterinary technician I will have to accept the good moments along with the bad.
Veterinary Medicine is a competitive field, whether you are going for your Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or to be a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT). There will be competitive programs you will need to do well in to be able to continue working at getting a degree to this field. A veterinarian or vet is a professionally skilled worker licensed in providing a wide range of medical care to diverse types of animals. Choosing a career is very important in a person’s life. Over the past two decades, many professions have change significantly with the influx of technological developments. One needs to think about the things that interest them and what kind of lifestyle they want to have. Some things a person should think about are what qualifications are needed, what type of training is necessary, and the future need of the career they choose. Some other things to consider would be how much money they will make, what is the probability of advancement, and does the career satisfy their need for an enjoyable life.
Choosing which career path to follow is one of the most important decision people take in their lifetime. Considering that this decision will affect the entire future life, it is very important to be sure that it is the right one. It is one of the most important steps in order to successfully find a job that would satisfy personality needs and guarantee a steady income. If he or she is passionate about their job, hard work is simplified and high salary helps to concentrate on results. The key about being successful at work is to be in love with it.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions a person has to make in their life. It is so important because that is what we will have to do to support ourselves throughout life. Imagine being stuck in a dead end job and having to go to work every morning and dreading it. That is no spending oneÕs time and life is too short to work 35 years and be unhappy with it. If a person likes the job they do then it is not work, because finding satisfaction out of a job can bring great happiness. That information has enabled me to make the decision of choosing my area of study and career in the field of Information Technology.
