This research includes information about Alka-Seltzer and it’s correlation with chemical reactions. Many people use the chemical reaction of Alka-Seltzers to heal themselves. Heat and cold can strongly affect the speed of a chemical reaction. This science project will determine the effect heat has on the reaction between a seltzer tablet and beakers of water. The temperatures will be extremely cold, cold, room temperature, hot, and boiling water. Alka-Seltzer is a medication that works as a pain reliever and an effervescent antacid. Antacids help neutralize stomach acidity, which can cause heartburn.The pain reliever used is aspirin and the antacid used is baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate. There are a few key concepts to chemical changes. A physical change, such as state change or dissolving, does not create a new substances, but a chemical change does. In a chemical reaction, the atoms and molecules that interact with each other are called reactants. To take the tablets, they're fully dissolved in water, where they famously undergo a chemical reaction that produces lots of carbon dioxide bubbles—or fizz. As the tablets dissolve, the sodium bicarbonate splits apart to form sodium and bicarbonate ions. The bicarbonate ions react with hydrogen ions from the citric acid to form carbon dioxide gas (and water). This is how the bubbles are made. Some chemical reactions, such as rusting, take a long time. Others, such as burning, take a very short amount of time. Exothermic reactions are chemical reactions such as: burning coal, rusting, and exploding gunpowder, give off heat. Because reactions liberate heat, they increase the ambient temperature. Overall my aim from the experiment conducted was achieved as; the factors that affect the rate of a chemical reaction were discovered. My hypotheses were proven as; a catalyst increases the speed of a reaction, larger surface area have a faster reaction rate, additional stirs make the reaction occur faster, the higher concentration levels quicken the rate of a reaction and temperature speeds up the reaction time. The investigation was a fair test as all variables were controlled as my results support this. Although the practical activity could be improved if it was to be repeated. Altogether it was a fantastic learning experience that I am grateful for participating in.

My aim in this piece of work is to see the effect of temperature on the rate of reaction in a solution of hydrochloric acid containing sodium thiosulphate.
