Growing up in a country where people speaks more than two hundred and forty different languages, you will grow to appreciate other people’s languages even if u don’t want to. The sound that comes out of their mouth, the harmony of jargon, rhymes you feel when they sing, play or recite chants. Even though, you don’t understand what they are saying. As for me I didn’t get to cherish these languages like I wanted. My focus was to become a polyglot. But, since different languages exists there was a need to create a common language for the total population. A language that can be used by the minorities and the Elites. This is a form of English language diluted with native languages. British English apart from being the official language, Pidgin English is one of the most spoken language in Nigeria especially in major cities like Lagos where my uncle just came from, Warri, Benin etc. I asked him to be my teacher a day we were taking a stroll home as usual. We walked few miles away from the shop when we came across a small boy, few years older than me from the way he looked, and a road side trader also known as petty traders. What happened between them is unknown to me or my uncle but, from the way things were, the woman way saying the boy is a thief she spoke my language so I hear her side of the story. The little boy on the hand does not speak my language nor pidgin main mentioning Queen’s language. I guess all he could speak was his native language. Judging from what the woman was saying, I felt bad for him even if he was guilty of what he was accused of or not, he doesn’t deserve the treatment the woman was giving him. In this school all they speak is undiluted British English. My first day I remember vividly, I was eager to get into school at least I speak Pidgin English. I believed no teacher or student sabi ride mi. Till the first break, I didn’t say a word to anybody, I took my time adjusting into my new environment but, at break time I was forced to talk. Terrible hunger has being striking me from the moment I stepped in my class but, the excitement of being in a new school filled me. I went to the lunch room, speaking in my native language, I ordered what I wanted to eat. The food attendant was surprised to hear me speak in vernacular as they called it. She gave me this scary look, and all I could think of was if am the first person in the history of man existence that has ever spoken another language. At that moment, I realized speaking of indigenous languages in school was highly prohibited. Instantly, a saying my aunts says often that, “if one can’t go forward, he goes back to where he is coming from” came to my mind. Then I said to her Hello madam, as u see me so, hunger don dey strike me since all I wan make u do for me na to sell me rice and beans and spaghetti with boiled egg. At this moment, without any one telling me what is going on I knew I have disturb the sleeping Tiger, she looked at me again, within the glimpse of an eye I knew if I didn’t get away from her things could get messy for me.
