I believe the study of epidemiology is an art to understanding the overall health of the general population. Throughout my life, I have had multiple core parts of my identity that I have actively incorporated into my activities and choices: I have a profound desire to impact health and wellness of vulnerable communities, an enjoyment of analytical thinking, and a love for innovation. These characteristics have made me decide to pursue epidemiology at Rollins School of Public Health. I have always been motivated by the prevention efforts for disease and treatment interventions on a public health level. My work at the Emory Children’s Center doing research on hemophilia bleeding disorder further stimulated my interests in the field of chronic disease. I saw firsthand on how epidemiologic research played a crucial role in translating scientific discoveries into innovative strategies, aiming to reduce the burden of chronic disease at the population and patient level. In addition to my chronic disease interest, I worked as a Women’s Health Intern at a refugee service focusing on women’s mental health. Here, I gained a stronger interest in maternal health. I joined the team as they were planning and initiating mental health and domestic violence screening programs among refugee women, as well as a way of determining if they were in need of family planning. I particularly worked creating a comprehensive data tracking for these programs and constructed the family planning questionnaire. It has taught me the importance of strengthening data collection in order to prepare analytical research, which is important to provide optimal help to improve the health of the refugees.
