It is not alone the day time which is hard to survive; the night was equally difficult to stay alive. Every day, both day and night, Snowman did everything to protect himself from the humidity and heat:
“But the build-up of hot, damp air under the tarp was too uncomfortable: at night, at ground level. With no breeze, the humidity felt like a hundred per cent: his breath fogged the plastic”. (OAC. Pp 42)
Atwood gives the imagery of the hailstones that are so powerful which can easily damage the skulls of the humans.
“He awakes to thunder and a sudden wind: the afternoon storms is upon him…Sometimes there are hailstones as big as golf balls, but the forest canopy slows their fall”. (OAC, Pp 49)

One major reason that can be said as the downfall of the humankind is the rapid inventions of the scientific tools. The environment change in the novel is shown parallel to that of the new scientific contraptions. Many different animals such as pigoons, rakunks and wolvogs are shown as genetically engineered and are left to live among the humans without thinking of the insinuation they could cause. When Jimmy visits his father’s working place which is OrganInc farms, he gets the opportunity to watch the pigoons and how they are genetically engineered. Jimmy in the novel states that:
“The pigoons were much bigger and fatter than ordinary pigs, to leave room for all of the extra organs. They were kept in special buildings, heavily secured: the kidnappings of a pigoon and its finely honed genetic material by a rival outfit would have been a disaster”. (OAC, pp 29)
The scientists, who have given credit for their extraordinary intelligence, only seem to use their brain in creating new species every day. They do not give their thought on the aftermath that it could cause in the future. They do not seem like caring about the evil results of their scientific experiments in the ecosystem, making the food chain lose its track and thus making the ecosystem …show more content…

It is not only the narration of his life but also about nature and environmental changes due to the scientific developments. Snowman narrates the story of how the various natural destructions and ecological calamities have taken place in the world and also the escalation of activities that have played the major role in the destroying of the planet and the annihilation of nature. Snowman, in the novel, reiterates the discussion that he had with his friend who is the scientist in a well-reputed organization. The discussion is about the new invention called “ChickieNobs”:
“Those are chickens,” said Crake. “Chicken parts. Just the breasts, on this one. They’ve got ones that specialize in drumsticks too, twelve to a growth unit.”
“But they aren’t any heads,” said Jimmy. He grasped the concept- he’d grown up with sus multiorganifer, after all- but this thing was going too far. At least the pigoons of his childhood hadn’t lacked heads.
“That’s the head in the middle,” said the woman. “There’s a mouth opening at the top, they dump the nutrients in there. No eyes or beak or anything, they don’t need
