The ground shook uncontrollably as the spawn of Satan himself approached my trembling body. It had been almost six hours since we had last crossed paths but it had felt like two to me. The atmosphere in the corridor had suddenly changed to that of a cemetery, and even though it was filled to the brim with high school students who were intrigued by what was going on, it still felt as if it was just me and him. I stood dead-still in the middle of the rush-hour traffic, and watched as he rambled carelessly towards me. My heart, now racing as fast as an Olympic sprinter, felt as if it was going to burst into a million pieces. I knew what the future held for me, and it was something familiar and extremely unpleasant, it was the bully. On our first breath-taking encounter of the day, he approached me with a devilish look in his brown eyes. He began his extreme torment by using harsh words that drove straight into my heart like a dagger. My palms became wet with perspiration as he crept closer, still lashing out at me furiously about my looks and my race. I became sick with anxiety. Just t...
In all of the thirteen years, not once did I believe that there was such things as monsters. Not the kind that live under your bed at least… But little did I know that the world is full of them. Monsters are all around us, disguised and camouflaged in the bodies of human beings. She’s the nice woman you pass and smile at walking down the street, and the busy man rushing to work on a Monday morning. Monsters cannot be detected with the naked eye. You have to get to know them and really observe the person before you can really tell if they’re a monster or not. I always imagined that you would know a monster when you saw one because they’d be extremely terrifying, and sometimes they are, but what surprised me the most is that I’ve been living with a monster my entire life and never had a clue.
The reading “The Terror” by Junot Diaz is a story I can relate to because of the emotional and physical bullying I experienced in high school which I was able to curb after informing my parents who took immediate actions to put a stop to it. Junot Diaz was narrating his experiences with fear after getting beat-up as an adolescent.
Tears prick my eyes and a burning sensation spikes through my lungs. A new sense of fear overwhelms me. The loud beating of my heart is deafening. “You filthy pig!” someone calls.
...nd personal story that shows the pitiful characters of Arpi and Connie that are victims of bullying at school. Then she concludes the story with a “perhasping” image of Connie and her mother at 7-Eleven transporting the readers from a classroom setting of kids bullied in front of an absentminded teacher to a sad picture in front of a store window. Considering the future, Murphy encourages the reader to evaluate their stand on cruelty and to make that difference not treat one another different. Murphy through rhetorical and tonal elements of pathos, logos, and diction expresses that cruelty in any form is wrong no matter how one tries to justify it. Doing bad for good is never right.
The central idea of “A Good Man Is Hard to Find” by Flannery O'Connor deals with the struggle to change a person in a positive way through religion. A person can be easily changed if grace, properly experienced, changes one's personal qualities (O'Connor qtd. in Hendricks). Attempting to change a person through religion becomes difficult when that individual demands to witness a miracle in order to believe: “if the Misfit had been able to see the miracle of Lazarus for himself, he would have believed that Jesus was the son of God, and he would have been able to live a conventional Christian life” (Hendricks).
World War II ended in 1945, but America could not rest. “Serious discussion about reorganization began in Congress and the military department in 1944 and aroused much public interest” (Trask 1997). Because the Air Force played such a large role, discussion of separating the Air Force from the Army Air Forces (AAF) began. A proposal was created to establish one department for the United States Armed Forces, combining all the military branches under one department. “On 19 December 1945, President Truman sent a message to Congress recommending a single department of national defense with three coordinate branches – land, sea, and air.” (Trask 1997). Management of Military and foreign policies were needed during peacetime as they were during wartime. The United States need for a national defense department, and a need to prevent any future attacks like Pearl Harbor, led to President Truman signing the National Security Act of 1947.
The Great Gatsby, is beautifully written, and uses symbols effectively, drawing the reader in, and piquing their interest from chapter one to chapter nine. The use of color is most common in the novel, with the use of of many colors the author is able to subtly get his point across. Fitzgerald also uses locations like the Valley of Ash. Objects are used as a way to create mystery and suspense. The symbols help the reader understand the novel better by adding details that make the story more interesting.
The preacher strives to create a horrifying image of hell where the Devil, “the old Serpent,” is waiting for sinners (Edwards 7). He effectively uses rhetorical elements to achieve his
Hesiod’s Theogony and the Babylonian Enuma Elish are both myths that begin as creation myths, explaining how the universe and, later on, humans came to be. These types of myths exist in every culture and, while the account of creation in Hesiod’s Theogony and the Enuma Elish share many similarities, the two myths differ in many ways as well. Both myths begin creation from where the universe is a formless state, from which the primordial gods emerge. The idea of the earth and sky beginning as one and then being separated is also expressed in both myths.
In life, people come across challenging obstacles’ when trying to achieve their goals. College, like that of life, has a variety of challenges that appear in a student’s pathway to their goals. For most college students that are just starting out in the basic classes, such as Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s English 101, problems can arise due to classes being much harder than the prior high school classes the students are used to. Mrs. Fox-Angerer’s class is hard because it has an online portion, it creates stress, and it is a required class.
These noises sounded like lips smacking, flesh tearing, and painful groans. Com turned, looked at her group, and motioned them to be mute and walk nonchalantly. She quietly pushed her way through a forest of grasses to see that one Giant Devil was making a meal of another. The victim was still alive, but barely. Being too distracted by his meal, the Giant Devil failed to noticed the Peaceful Ones walking past.
Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I lye on my side, sandwiched between the cold, soft dirt and the hot, slick metal of the car. The weight of the car pressed down on the lower half of my body with monster force. It did not hurt, my body was numb. All I could feel was the car hood's mass stamping my body father and farther into the ground. My lungs felt pinched shut and air would neither enter nor escape them. My mind was buzzing. What had just happened? In the distance, on that cursed road, I saw cars driving by completely unaware of what happened, how I felt. I tried to yell but my voice was unheard. All I could do was wait. Wait for someone to help me or wait to die.
It was a beautiful night. It was perfect for a walk. As I strolled further into the park a figure approached me. It was as dark as pitch so I couldn’t make out who it was. It was late; you wouldn’t usually see anyone at this time. My heart was beating faster and faster. The strange thing was I wasn’t frightened; it was just my heart beating rapidly. As the masculine figure approached, I began to walk slower. That was when I heard the voice.
Pedaling my bike, I swerved left and right, dodging all sorts of trash which littered the desolate ground beneath my feet. The car was gaining ground fast; its ebony visage glaring at me like some hell-spawned demon. A cold clammy hand seemed to envelope my body. I knew I could not escape.
Every time I sat on that chair I closed my eyes. I was not brave enough to see that ugly monster doing his bloody game on me. When you see this monster, you would be scared from him too. his appearance was not good, nor has the room. Every time he entered the room he had to bend, so he could enter. Even his head had strange things. For instance, his lips were strange. When you see them, you would be able to know the definition of darkness. I even thought he ate cigarettes not smoked them .
