Ender’s Game, written by Orson Scott Card, is a novel about a genius boy who has his life turned around at the age of six when he is invited to go to Battle School. Battle School is a place where not so ordinary children are shaped into soldiers to fight against the buggers, an alien species that attacked Earth. Andrew Wiggin, better known as Ender, trains non-stop to become an unstoppable force against the buggers. What Ender doesn’t know is that Colonel Graff has chosen him to be the commander of the elite force against the buggers. Ender changed his toughness, his intelligence, and his leadership dramatically throughout the novel
The first way Ender changed throughout the novel is his to cope with situations he did not like. In other words, his toughness. For example, Ender at the beginning of the novel would cry if he did not like the sound of it. “Tears came to Ender’s eyes in spite of himself. He turned his face away, but would not reach up to wipe them” (Card 52). This shows that Ender did not have enough strength to hold back his tears. However, through Battle School he became stronger and tougher. Towards the end of the novel almost nothing could cause him to cry. Card states, “He stood strongly, facing them, his arms at his sides. At the beginning of the novel Ender was is a normal school system where he was learning on his grade level. However, when he went to Battle School, the staff pushed him to study very complex subjects such as Geometry and Rocket Science. For example, “This was school. Every day, hours of classes. Reading. Numbers. History” (Card 77). This shows that the teachers did not give Ender any breaks and forced him to study continually. Towards the end of the novel, Ender was talking to Mazer Rackham, about strategies in space and ideas on how to defeat the bugger fleet.
