Inside Out, the 2015 Pixar animated movie about personified emotions, may seem just like a nice, pleasant movie about how the brain of a twelve year old briefly loses two emotions and then recovers them just in time, before any major real-world consequences occurred. Her brain became even better after and the emotions learned a valuable lesson about how sadness, while not always the most enjoyable, still has a definite value and importance as an emotion. However upon a much closer inspection the film actually portrays a fairly accurate representation of how emotions truly behave in the brain. This is representative of the thought process of someone who struggles to process an event emotionally, which makes since given Riley’s developing status. Puberty expands our emotional realm of understanding, and Inside Out represents these growing pains by physically having the emotions battle for control of Riley’s mind. Each emotion has a different way of trying to control her: Anger punches and takes control in a blinding rage; Disgust shoves her way to control when she sees something that evokes an “ugh”; Fear asserts his suggestions on what the best course of action is based off danger reports; Joy, the main leader of the group, is in control by default and tries to lead Riley to the happiest route in life; Sadness, lastly, lacks any control throughout the movie as the other emotions (Joy, primarily) stifles her desire to take control. However, upon learning of Sadness’s potential importance in Riley’s life, Joy finally lets Sadness control briefly.
