Successful female performers can have a lot of similarities and a lot of differences. For instance, Ellen DeGeneres and Oprah Winfrey have a lot of differences. Both women live in the United States; however, Ellen resides on the west coast, while Oprah is established in the northeast. Ellen enjoys exercising and art. Meanwhile, Oprah enjoys fine furs and designer clothing. Ellen is lean; Oprah is plump. Despite their differences, these two women have similarities in family circumstances, minority challenges, and career paths. To begin, Ellen and Oprah had similar childhoods. They are both women who were born in the southern United States in the 1950's, came from single parent homes, and attended college. According to Current Biography Yearbook, Ellen was born in Metairie, Louisiana on January 26, 1958, to Elliott and Betty DeGeneres. She attended many public schools in New Orleans until her parents divorced and she moved to Atlanta, Texas with her newly remarried mother. After Ellen graduated from high school, she moved back to New Orleans and attended college for half of a semester at the University of New Orleans with a concentration in speech and communication (Graham 97-100). Ellen appeared on the Tonight Show and on various television programs until she obtained her own show, These Friends of Mine, which was later renamed just Ellen in 1994 (Graham 97-100). She has written a variety of books containing her memoirs, humor, and hobbies. Likewise, Oprah appeared on television, not as a Tonight Show guest, but as a co-anchor and reporter for two news stations, WTVF-TV and WJZ-TV.
