However, Elizabeth portrays exaggerated prejudice, which becomes her main flaw as the novel progresses. Her prejudice is seen when Darcy influences Bingley against Jane at the Netherfield ball. She spends a better part of the first and middle sections of the novel hating her future husband. When Darcy proposes to her, she turns him down, but his continued persistence proves that he is serious. Darcy at first says that Elizabeth is handsome and remarks that he is not interested in her. Elizabeth realizes her prejudice against Darcy and changes to accept him by regretting her first rejection of him. She finally admits to herself that she loves Darcy although doubt makes her think that she no longer stands a chance with him. Moreover, she states her appreciation of Darcy once she learns that he saved Lydia from disgrace and as such swallows her pride and when Darcy asks for her hand in marriage, Elizabeth is wiser and accepts. …show more content…

Darcy is first portrayed as arrogant without knowing it and full of flaws, which leads to his unpopularity and misunderstanding with other people, although people envy him for his wealth and good looks. One of the people who take a disliking of him is Elizabeth due to his haughty rudeness, especially when he says that he is not interested in her, at the ball. Darcy offers a condescending and haughty proposal to Elizabeth, which is refuses out rightly. The refusal by Elizabeth sets Darcy to a self-realization course and thus jolts his pride thereby driving him to change for the better. He changes from an insolvent aristocrat to a kind and pragmatic gentleman. Darcy is portrayed as intelligent and a generous landlord as well as a devoted brother. He also changes to become courteous and kind towards is parents and thus changing to become the perfect picture of a thoroughbred gentleman and Elizabeth’s ideal
