Eli Whitney was a very famous leader in agriculture. He was able to gain this title and his fame by his revolutionary invention of the cotton gin. Not only did he invent the cotton gin that helped cotton farmers all over the world he also created guns and supplied them to the government. Eli Whitney was born in Westborough, Massachusetts on December, 8 1765. He worked on his father’s farm and his goal was to study law. He taught school to continue his education and ended graduating from Yale College in 1782 (“Eli Whitney Facts.”) Whitney moved to Georgia and accepted an invitation to stay with Catherine Greene on her plantation. While there Whitney learned about the struggles that cotton farmers faced with short staple cotton. In result of this he still needed a way to support himself so he signed a contract with the government to make guns. Whitney had no idea how to accomplish this task and in the terms of his contract he failed the task. However he did not give up and did in fact deliver his guns to the government. His first 500 guns were delivered 3 years late and the last guns were delivered almost 9 years late (“Eli Whitney Facts.”) Eli Whitney was an amazing leader in agriculture.
