Some may think that genres such as dubstep are just created by pressing a button, or simply putting everything together in one move. Truth is, making electronic dance music is an art that takes years and years to master, with so many factors coming into play such as composition, EQing, compression, mastering, and just getting a melody in your head to the computer. In the golden era of technology, making electronic dance music has never been as accessible to anyone with headphones and a computer. Starting out is the same way any other practice or hobby is started; playing around and getting a feel for what program you're using. Often what will happen is that you get the roughly the main idea down, and work from there. A song always turns into something much bigger than the original idea opon figuring out what could help the song advance and make it better. Having a physical piano keyboard makes it easier to draw down ideas because you can just hit "Record" and play it out rather than popping in each and every individual note on the virtual piano-roll. When it comes to making a song commericially loud and getting the maximum clarity out of a song, thats where things such as EQing and compression come in. EQing and compression makes it where each sound will stay at the level of volume its at regardless of how louder something else might get, and will make, say, 5 sounds or melodies sound like just 1 sound rather than being able to pay attention to each sound on its own. This stage of the production process is what sets you apart from amatuers, where its often almost a competition in where who has the best quality

The early dubstep movement started out in the United Kingdom in late 1998. The early dubstep releases were all experimental and garage produced. The early dubstep releases were trying to incorporate drum and bass into the popular 2 step electronic dance music which was extremely popular. Early artists who worked in dubstep were El-B, Steve Gurley, Oris Jay, and Zed Bias. Initially dubstep started out as the “B-Side” on a record. The B-side was the flipside of a record and the artist usually placed the music they wanted to become “a hit” on the A-side. The term dubstep was not even coined until around 2002 when Ammunition Promotions began to use the term to promote their club Forward >> in London. Forward >> was crucial in the development of the dubstep genre as it was the first club to devote the venue to the sound and the environment in which dubstep artists could release their new songs. One method of receiving training in the audio engineering field is through short course and seminars. While these serve only as an introduction to the field by themselves, they are also instrumental in keeping professionals abreast with current trends and technologies affecting the industry. Such seminars are also a great source of networking for the professional. Short courses and seminars are an excellent way of supplementing a one or two-year program to enter the field. These schools tend to concentrate on the actual usage and maintenance of studio equipment. Hands-on experience and intensive exposure to the equipment is an advantage of such a program. Most offer considerable job placement services as well. Trade or occupational schools are a good choice if someone wishes to someday become a recording engineer.

The only question left is what will happen once people are bored with genre mixing. In other words, when the “strange” becomes “familiar” what will satisfy people’s appetite for entertainment? Maybe the emergence of the perfect genre will take over the market by stealing the best parts of all music and combining it to please everyone. The Internet Age is both a blessing and a curse when it comes to music. A person is able to create masterpieces by using other people’s music and blending various genres but one must not forget the Internet is what has caused people to crave creativity in the first place.

If you plan to advance as a producer, it will be a rough experience trying to ascend to a higher position. Throughout the semester, we have intensively studied how computer science relates to the world around us, through video games, database systems, and artificial intelligence. But what we have not discussed is how all of these subjects in computer science, like pep8, pseudo code, gates and circuits, relate to our artistic world; dance, music, and live theatre. Listening to a piece of music, or as an audience member watching a dance or theatre performance, one assumes that the entire production, stemmed solely from the creativity of those involved. What most do not realize, is the intensive knowledge of computer science that these artists are required to have to make a production happen. The technical crew of a show raises the curtain on technical and theatrical automation, and a musician uses many different software programs to create digital music. But what would happen if these responsibilities were given solely to an intelligent computer? Or moreover, what would happen if a computer was given the aptitude for the same artistic understanding that is required to do these forms of art? This kind of intelligent environment could expand the expressive potential of the arts and in computer science in many ways, but how will it affect the viewers and performers perception of the traditions of music, dance, and theatre? While intelligence technology often enables new ways of creation, it can also harbor a lack of creativity in the arts, and lacks the “real world” knowledge that an artist, musician, dancer, or choreographer has. Exploring how the arts have affected and contributed to creations in artificial intelligence so far, will help us to understand and predict how it will hinder or benefit the creativity and reality of the arts, as ...
