Elderly Driving Tests

I believe that people over the age of 75 should not be allowed to drive without taking an agility test. Those who do not pass this test have their driver’s license taken away from them. Initially all beginning drivers are required to take an agility test along with an eye exam before we are issued a driver’s license. As we age our vision and agility skills may diminish. Therefore all elderly drivers should be have to take an agility test in order to keep this license. In most cases old age is a time of “review, retirement, and adjustment to new social roles involving decreasing strength and health (Berk, L. This is why the agility test should be given, to separate those who are still in good health and have the ability to drive from those who have bad health and are unable to drive. Many people would argue that there is not a certain age where people are considered to be old. Although there is not a specified age where one can be labeled “elderly”, 70 is the common age to be perceived as a person of old age. By this age most people are retired and collecting full social security benefits. At this age most adults are beginning to notice declines in their former capabilities. They do not go out as much as they used to mostly because their age has began to limit the things they were once able to accomplish. There are people who would say that teens are more reckless than the elderly. Due to advancements in health and nutrition, the amount of elderly people is currently on the rise. There are more and more elderly drivers clinging to the independence that their cars give them meanwhile they are losing the ability to control these vehicles which causes more accidents.
