Many issues have arisen in society that lead to the want of bettering our country, and one form of improvement is to better the people that make society bad, prisoners. Mistakes are made, but that does not mean that society should let that mistake decide that fate of a person's future. People can change, and by helping one to change for the better, everyone would benefit. By giving prisoners free education, society and our country can be ameliorated into a more improved nation and reduce recidivism.

As it comes down to the basis of prisoner education to better society, some factors must be looked at: who would receive an education, would there be limits to the education, and who would pay for the education? Prison inmates may be receiving only general education, which would help them to improve their choices and actions committed, but by entitling prisoners to attain a form of degree, society and the country would liberate the prison inmates to better themselves further. Education is an outlet to self- improvement and empowerment, and not giving prisoners the ability to learn would be an injustice to their rights. Donald Lee's article, "Correction Course: The Benefits of Prison Education" argues, "If society wants to reduce the number of people victimized by crime, reason dictates that an inmate's time in prison should be used to correct the antisocial behaviors that put him or her there in the first place" (Lee).
