Edmund Emil Kemper III: Born or Product? A morning filled with shouting and screaming to one another, was the conversation held between a boy and his grandmother. Infuriated with his grandmother, he rushed off searching for the rifle he received as a gift for hunting. The next step was a gruesome decision that would change his life forever. As he held the gun in his hands, he started walking towards his grandmother. She was quietly sitting at the kitchen table working on her latest children book. She turned her head only to witness the frightening view of her only grandson standing angrily in the middle of the floor. It is difficult to believe that a teenager could perform such a horrible act. However, that was only the beginning of Edmund’s murdering spree. So it makes people wonder. What creates a serial killer? Is it all blamed on mental illness’ or are serial killers a product of society. That being said, several researches have been done to answer these questions, which would be justified in the following essay.
Before continuing with the theories, let’s define what exactly a serial killer is. A serial killer is a person who murders three or more people, usually in service of abnormal psychological gratification, with the murders taking place over more than a month and including a significant break (a "cooling off period") between them (The Free Dictionary. Only then to discover his father secretly remarried and had children. Even though, he was very hurt by the situation he decided to stay with his father. However, his stay with his father was very short lived, because he did not get along well with the new family. Edmund was then forced to move back with his mother, only to be rejected immediately. She sent Edmund to live with his grandparents, which would later be an awful mistake. A lot of serial killers come from a dysfunctional family with an absent father (Eric, AvvoStories).
