The scandalous and intriguing novel by Edith Wharton shows how relationships can have a negative effect on peoples decisions and cause them to act impulsively. The novel is mostly based on Ethan and Mattie’s relationship, and how he would rather be with her than his wife. Ethan and Mattie both believe their relationship is positive, since they are in love. Their relationship is nothing but negative, and you can tell by the outcome of it. You can watch how their relationship effect everyone’s actions all the way until the end of the novel. Zeena has finally decided to replace Mattie with a new female help. We all know it is because she either knows of, or is suspicious of Ethan and Mattie’s relationship. This causes Ethan to react impulsively and even plan to run away with Mattie. He writes a letter to Zeena telling her he is leaving, but stops when some obstacles get in his way. This is the last time they will be together, so many things are spilled out. Mattie confesses her love for him and how she found the letter to Zeena and Ethan finally tells her his intentions. Throughout the talking they come across some children sledding. On an earlier occasion they said they wanted to sled together so they did. They went down the hill once, but on the return up the hill they both started to panic realizing this will be their last moments together. In the frantic state Mattie proposes a suicidal idea. She wants to die together by riding the sled together into a tree. Ethan without question or thinking does so, and crashes into the tree. The results were not what they wanted though.
