Edgar Allan Poe has a unique way of writing poems and other literary works. The majority of his poems involve men have become widowed; Poe does this because he too was a widowed man. “The Raven” has about three themes in which they express: grief, negativity, and depression. All of which Poe has experienced in his short 40 year life. Poe uses a sense of grief in all of his poems, because of how his marriage and life was losing close ones. In “The Raven” he uses a sense of grief in lines 10-11 saying “From my books surcease of sorrow—sorrow for the lost Lenore— for the rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” which means he is trying to forget about Lenore’s death but has no choice to grieve upon it. After the passing of his mother, his father orphaned him. Poe and siblings became separated during this situation. While in college, he started drinking, which led him to dropping out college and going into the United States Army. Although Poe had countless people who admired him; his interest in unspoken and psychological left him unable to successfully sell his work. His drinking problem continued in fact he could never keep a job over a year as a result of it. Every time Poe took a step forward something knocked him back three more steps. Depression causes Poe to write most of his pieces if not all of them. This also causes him to start drinking, which made him do things that were remorseful. As mentioned in paragraphs 1-3 he dropped out of college and died by virtue of alcohol. Poe was depressed that we are not sure about, it could be about his mother dying, becoming an orphan, maybe losing his wife. Depression made him a great writer, but also had a numerous of negative effects. Poe’s life was far from great, he made something out of it by writing pieces we still read today. “The Raven” is the best I’ve read from Poe. “The Raven” shows his style of writing better than most of his great poems. Poe showed us that us that you can have adversity, but that should not stop you from doing great
