Imagine being constantly monitored and assessed, unknowingly controlled, brainwashed, and restricted from being your unique self. In the two novels examined in this essay, these horrific ideas come to life. The novels are, a classic dystopian novel, 1984 by George Orwell, and a modern dystopian novel, The Circle written by Dave Eggers. Comparing their motifs and dystopian features along with its effect on the readers, the question, "How does motif use in the dystopian novels The Circle and 1984 emphasize societal values?” will be examined. The research question is worthy of study as it highlights the effect of literature on people. They then incorporate that into the storyline of their dystopian novels in order to strike the readers into realization of their true values. I chose this topic for my Extended Essay, because when I first read 1984, it had scared me like no other novel has before, and I was curious as to why. I found out that it was because, the novels gave me an opportunity to appreciate the society I live in, but the fearful portrayals in the novels also made me believe that it is possible for the real world to turn into a dystopia. I believe that this is because we are given reasonable freedom and rights, while their societies lack freedom; and our society’s similarities with theirs indicated that we could lead ourselves into a dystopia if we are not careful. Control and manipulation, elimination of privacy, and restriction of originality and individualism are all prominent motifs involved in the theme, lack of freedom, which is what makes these novels dystopic. Lack of freedom, as depicted in 1984 and The Circle, is the most unnerving aspect of these dystopian novels, and through this, I will be observing and discussing the effect of its revelation of what the readers value in their own society in which they live
