Some people are convinced that a lack of will power is at the root of drug addiction, but I believe that it is linked to a brain disease. In most cases, the use of drugs begins voluntarily. However, using drugs persistently over time results in a brain disease, which alters the function and structure of the brain (“We Can Conquer Drug Addiction”). Addiction can be more than a brain abnormality; genetics can play a role in the likelihood of someone becoming addicted to drugs. In general, drugs are known for changing mood, memory, perception, and emotional states. If the drugs become an addiction, then severe effects related to health and social problems will occur. Some other consequences include drug cravings, and interference with, or destruction of an individuals’ functioning in their family and in society. The recovery from addiction is a fragile process and important for a person’s well being, because anything can trigger a relapse. The smallest stressor, such as being stuck in traffic, can result in a relapse. Even boredom, that we all experience on a daily basis, can trigger a relapse. Recovery is essential for a person who wants to regain a normal functioning life. Part of an addict’s recovery is to stay away from people, places, and things associated with drugs. Many reasons why people do drugs in the first place is to avoid situations they do not wish to deal with. However we should not forget the more mundane excuses such as boredom and peer pressure.
Today, more than twenty million Americans abuse drugs and alcohol. That is a huge figure that must be addressed. In order to help people, we need to answer the three main questions about addiction: what is addiction, what causes addiction, and how we can prevent addiction?...

Their normal functioning in society takes a plunge for the worst. Major health issues are involved when withdrawing from a substance. Addiction affects addicts and people around them both emotionally and physically. It is important to get people to understand that addicts should receive the same amount of attention and treatment as anyone else with a debilitating disease. Drug addicts are human beings too. Addicts should not be judged to be immoral people. They are often looking for help, respect, and encouragement from their peers, friends, and families, as well as serious medical intervention. It is time to allow them the respect they deserve, to overcome their debilitating condition.
