How would you feel if you got to sit and relax in your car while you were going somewhere but not actually having to drive? Well thanks to the advanced technology driverless cars are already in the making. People may think it is a good idea for the United States to move toward a society with driverless cars but it is not because the cars would have safety issues, the cars wouldn’t be able to go very far without help from humans and the car will be expensive.

According to the text, page 3, “The software in the phones, laptops and other devices is not designed to operate for extended periods without crashing or freezing.” This means that the car could have glitches and start to freeze causing the car could to crash which could cause a dangerous environment. Who fault is it when a driverless car gets into an accident? Google is the primary car and vehicle creators, and the government’s actions both in the U.S. and overseas are spending nearly billions of dollars to care the growth of the vehicle technology with the possible to make highway travel way more harmless than it is nowadays. How does someone apportion blame between a vehicle’s mechanical systems and an actual human driver? Is it the software the blame for the accident or was it the hardware? These sorts of problems have led to proposals that liability will be a problem when these driverless cars are released to the public.
Driveless cars, are they the future or are they going to be an idea that never succeeds? It is something that everyone is wanting to know and see if it will actually work out. It's 2017 so what more can we ask for than cars that drive themselves? It is a great idea and if it actually works out as planned then it will definitely be one for the books. However, will the driverless cars turn out as plan or will it just be another failed idea and be pushed away to the side? With that, the inventors of the so-called driverless cars seem to be quite confident in there idea and what to prove that they can make it work and sometime in the near future have those cars on the road. The inventors have already spoken on how the driverless cars work and other news sites have spoken on the limitations and issues along with what technology comes with the car to make it driverless and safe.

In source #3 paragraph 4 it says “surveyed people want to ride in cars that protect passengers at all costs-even if the pedestrians would now end up dying.” This is important because the self driving cars create a conflict between society, about who the car could save. Also those surveyed people are in conflict with themselves, trying to decide what outcome could be better. In source #3 paragraph 13 it states “people imagined actually buying a driverless car...people again said pedestrians-protecting cars were more moral...people admitted that they wanted their own car to be programmed to protect its passengers.” This shows when you actually think about the reality of having a driverless car, you wouldn’t want to die in an accident when you could have been saved. In the year 2000 the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that around 41,000 people were killed in traffic accidents within the United States. This mortality rate has since dropped 25% from 2000 to 2009 (Rockett et al., 2012). There are many reasons for motor vehicle injuries, ranging from lack of seat belt use, elderly drivers, alcohol and young children being improperly secured. All of these things factor into motor injuries differently and must be addressed as a separate problem. Highway safety is an important issue in public health and many things have already been implemented to help reduce accidents and injuries. Actions like mandatory seat use, shatter resistant windshields, speed limits, and child restraints.

Harsh weather conditions make it difficult and dangerous for people to drive, however, the car’s ability to drive through inclement weather “frees the user’s time, creates opportunities for individuals with less mobility, and increases overall road safety” (Bose 1326).
