Drinking and driving is such an issue to society, because driving intoxicated effects many people lives. Many people drink and drive because they think they know themselves when they drink, so they tell themselves they can make it to their destination. Drinking and driving is when an individual is under the influence of alcohol and decides to drive. Just because an intoxicated person makes it to their destination fine in a since that may not be the case each and every time. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention twenty-eight people die each day because of drunk driving in the United States of America. For me that is too many people life’s taken away. He is considered as the founder of Sociology. Sociology as the study of social facts. Emile Durkheim is best for explaining why drinking and driving is a social problem and the effects/ consequences of it. When people drink, and drive the individual vision is lessened, their judgment and decision making is impaired, and among other effects of drinking and driving as mentioned earlier in the paper. A few terms that Emile Durkheim will describe the social problem of drinking and driving is anomie, human egoism, underregulating, restitutive law, and functional interdependence. Anomie is the condition of “normlessness.” In other words, anomie is an absent of norms. It deals with a collective consciousness that regulate individual behaviors which weakens because they start to see the world outside the moral framework. There are many conditions to anomie. Another point of anomie is underregulating. Underregulating is individuals lack external control. A second part of anomie is human egoism. Human egoism is done out of self-interest. Human egoism is when an individual wants more and more. They desire more for themselves without looking out for anybody else but themselves. This leads to functional interdependence. Also, how there are many reasons why people drink, but they get intoxicated or even drunk based on their self- interest or selfish desires, because of their human egoism. According to Sociological Lives And Ideas: An Introduction to the Classical Theorists during Emile Durkheim time in the late 1880’s, in France divorce rates where on the rise and fertility had declined sooner than other European countries (Pampel 2007:51). Divorce in the Catholic church was a taboo. Many people at that time observed that the decline in fertility is caused by, “growing selfishness” (Pampel 2007:51) as a cause. This is the problem when individuals drink and drive. According to Sociological Lives And Ideas: An Introduction to the Classical Theorists it states that, “Too few people, they declared, willingly sacrificed their own pleasures for the good of children and the future of French society” (Pampel 2007:51). From this I got that very little people in the United States of America who drink and know they get intoxicated or drunk are responsible for taking precautionary or cautionary measures when it comes to drinking and deciding not to drive.
