Recommended: The effect of drinking and driving

Drinking age is one of the big issues in the whole wide world currently. Actually, People should make a connection between drinking cultures and ages, because there are a lot of different drinking cultures and it is definitely affecting drinking problems. Some countries are open minded towards drinking, but the others might not be.Countries such as Italy, China, Greece and Japan have its drinking age to be lower than 21, and they seem to have fewer alcohol related problems. Current law in terms of legal drinking age has caused more alcohol related deaths than there has ever been, but in my point of view setting the age limit for alcohol should be at least above age eighteen. Teenagers that are below 18 are too young to control the use of alcohol. …show more content…

It has been about three years since I came to the states to study, and during those times. I have met different kinds of people from different places. I learned that every single country has its own different facts. One of the biggest differences might be the drinking culture since each country has its own age limits. I have a friend who is from Japan and she was my best friend in the United States. I visited Japan during my summer vacation to go see her.Experiencing Japans own culture, I learned that it is very different to our own, based on honor and shame. Although they are able to smoke in front of older people, they are not allowed to drink with older people which is different from our country. They definitely observe the drinking proprieties. It seemed so different when I was drinking in Japan. Everything was unusual for me. Japanese people were to be drinking slowly as in their own tempo, and had control of their drinking limit. Also, no one waddles around in Japan at night. On the other hand, I am likely to hear the sound of “bomb shot” in any weekday evening in Seoul.The “bomb shot” is a favorite drink to throw away the stress. The “bomb shot” is a mixture of soju, which is Korean traditional alcohol, and beer.People pass the “bomb shot” over and over. The shots go around all night, resulting in all people being

    Drinking Age Limit I. A. HOOK A-1. Everyone knows that it is illegal to consume alcohol until the age of 21 in the United States. Many people are in agreement with this legal restriction. Some would even say that it should be raised. However, the legal drinking age sometimes causes more problems then it prevents. B. I am here today to persuade you that drinking age limit should be lowered. C. Why? Because we care. We care about people who abuse alcohol and in that way harm themselves, their families, and innocent people around them. II. A. First, it is necessary to question this law. Why is 21 the "magical" age that makes one intelligent and mature enough to consume alcohol? Surely, some adults abuse alcohol and some teenagers in this ver room would be perfectly able to drink responsibly. Why not 18 or 35 or 40? At 18, people are considered adults. It may seem unfair to many observers to allow 18-20 year olds to marry, to have children, to own cars, homes, pay taxes, vote, fly planes, risk their lives in the armed forces own firearms and to be financially and socially independent, and yet to be legally prohibited from drinking a glass of wine in a restaurant, or even a glass of champagne at their own wedding.     According to research done by SUNY Potsdam, the mean drinking age around the world is 15.9 years old, the majority of countries (62%) have a drinking age set at 18 years old, and only seven countries, including the United States, have a drinking age of 21 (potsdam.edu). Does the United States government not see a trend here? Having a drinking age of 21 years old is outdated and unrealistic, and the rest of the countries around the world have come to realize this. Many American’s today have a liberal stance on this issue and agree it is time for a change. Liberals believe that the government should cooperate with the ever changing culture and follow the lead of many other countries who have successfully adopted a minimum drinking age of 18. On the other hand, conservative groups such as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) believe that changing the drinking age of 21 is right and no change is needed. Despite the strong resistance from certain groups such as MADD, I believe Congress and the rest of America should consider lowering the drinking age to 18 because 18 year olds are already technically considered adults, disallowing 18-21 year olds to drink only increases unsafe “underground” binge drinking, and by changing the drinking age to 18 more safety precautions can be taken to avoid harm from drinking. I suggest the U.S. Congress should overrule their initial National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 and change the age from 21 to 18.
