Don’t Drug Test Welfare Recipients Chikondi Nkhoma Brown Mackie College – Louisville Don’t Drug Test Welfare Recipients If you can afford buying drugs, why can’t you afford to buy food and other necessities? This young lady I know have four children. She gets welfare in everything. When I talk about welfare I mean food stamps, k tap money, medical insurance and housing. Her life style is way better than me, mind you she don’t know how a paycheck look like; but I work two jobs and we can’t even match. She sells her food stamps for extra money to buy expensive jewelry, drugs and clothes. This is why people are urging for drug testing welfare recipients. However, some people after the history of drug testing, we feel like they should not drug test because of the society impact. History for Drug Testing Welfare Recipients. Substance abuse issues, have been part of the government assistance. Several states proposed drug testing of welfare recipients, since 1996. In 2009 over twenty states proposed legislation, that drug testing will be the requirement. In 2010 twelve states had the same proposal, but it didn 't came to a law. In 2011 three states passed legislation, four states enacted laws in 2012. Two states passed legislation in 2013 (Finzel, 2016). Apparently, not all states have passed the law, because the research has not put impact to all states. Alternatively, they should not drug test anyone for benefits. Those who argue that they should not drug test welfare recipients say that it is a constitutional to drug test welfare recipients, because most circuit courts have ruled out. It unfairly targets a tiny subset of public benefits, because the assumption that people with low-income are more likely than the othe... ... middle of paper ... ... researching the history, most people think they should not drug test because of the impact to the society. Even the bible said children will be punished for their parent’s sins, but we need to be human; because those recipients have children who need to eat, shelter and medical insurance they will be punished because of their parents.
