Comparative Essay: Don Quixote de la Mancha and Man of La Mancha
The Book Don Quixote de la Mancha is a classic book about chivalry written by Miguel de Cervantes. The book tells of the mishaps of a man named Don Quixote who was obsessed with chivalry. Don Quixote takes on a squire named Sancho Panza, dubs himself a knight, and embarks on a journey seeking adventure. The exploits of Don Quixote have inspired numerous remakes and adaptations including, Man of La Mancha, which is a musical that tells the story of Miguel de Cervantes and his experiences in prison during the Inquisition. The following is a comparative analysis of the two works with emphasis on the differences that make each unique.
The fundamental difference between the two works is the context in which the adventures of Don Quixote are told. In Cervantes book, the adventures of Don Quixote are represented as fact, and as having happened at a certain point in history. In the Don Quixote, the battle with the windmills occurs after he left Inn. On the other hand, the “Man of La Mancha” is a play that illustrates his fight and losing the match. Afterward, he proceeds to Inn. This order makes the book and plays to differ in conveying the story. For instance, the death of Man of Don Quixote is illustrated differently in two aspects. In the Don Quixote, he died unexpectedly, but he had called the priest to do all the praying and sacraments procedures. The play, however, illustrates how the gatherers tried to burn his manuscript. He had slept in a comma, helplessly understanding that hi is about to die. He asked the priest to help him make his will while in the Man of La Mancha, he still believed he could continue working on his crazy dreams.
