The Dominican Republic (DR) is a small country in the caribbean on an island that is shared by Haiti. The DR attracts tourism and is a lovely place to be, however, it is infected with the plague known as drug trafficking. This issue has led to many attacks such as Francina Hungria, a thirty-one year old who was doing errands before work when she was jumped by two complete strangers. She says that; “it is all tied to the fact that so many people have access to firearms, and there is no control. And the fact that there are so many drugs right now going into the country… it is a mess what we are living these days” (Planas).
The Dominican Republic does not approve of the use of illicit drugs and as seen under law 50-88, possessing any such contraband for use, sell, or trafficking is punishable in the eyes of the law. The punishment for a the possession of such drugs can be up to twenty years in prison (LAW No. 50-88 [OF 30 MAY 1988] ON DRUGS A). …show more content…

President Medina believes that drug are a huge issue in the DR and that this plague. along with inequality, affects the rest of the world as well: “Inequality also is a breeding ground for transnational crime and drug trafficking who are recruiting younger and younger and destroying any possibility of a future for them.”, “So one of the tasks facing us at the international level is to rethink our policy on how to combat drugs”
