Domestic Violence refers to the use of aggression towards one's significant other (be it in a marriage, in a committed relationship or a casual cohabitation). While the victims are mostly women, it is not unheard of men to be on the receiving end of domestic violence. In the United States, 22.1% of women and 7.4% of men having been victimized at least once in their lifetime by their spouse (current / former) or boyfriend/girlfriend. Statistically, 1 in every 4 women in the United States has been victimized at some point in her life. It is a gross misunderstanding that domestic violence prevails solely in households of the lower socio-economic class. However, what needs to be acknowledged is that physically harming a partner, irrespective of the extent of visible physical damage, is simply unacceptable. Victims should be encouraged to raise their voice at the onset of any form of intentional physical aggression (actual or threatened), because if such behavior is silently tolerated once, it is likely to happen again, and will gradually increase in its intensity
