The relentless and reoccurring violent crimes against women in Mexico is something of grave concern. Though the topic of domestic violence is often the one most would sooner avoid, the regularity and extremely brutal nature of these crimes have surpassed the point of turning the other shoulder and needs to thoroughly be addressed. In order to propose solutions to remedy the continual hate crimes, one must first understand what exactly domestic violence is. This paper will analyze and define domestic violence as it pertains the region and culture. Then, specific examples will be identified to truly put the nature of these crimes in perspective. The obvious connection between the concentration of the two issues goes without question, but further investigation is necessary to better understand the issue. One would assume the violence would keep to just the men as they battle for turf, but women come into play as a representation of power. They are seen as a territory or a prize to be conquered. The rape or violent murder of women belonging to the opposing gang is intended to intimidate rivals. According to Reuters, the victims of these horrendous crimes continue to get younger as the attacks become harsher and more violent in nature. In concentrated drug areas, "the number of women slain jumped of 500 percent between 2001 and 2010 according to a study by Mexico's National Commission to Prevent and Eradicate Violence against Women."(Rama, Diaz). Furthermore, the brutality is capitalized upon once the murder has been committed. Often times, assailants will display the body of the gruesomely murdered in public as a means of intimidation as well as a symbol of power and ownership of the turf. The overhaul of the judicial system in Mexico would create an environment that instills more fear of the reprimands that come as a response to the hate crimes and therefore lessen the extreme violence and regularity associated with these crimes. A stricter criminal justice system would also prevent those convicted of a crime to be released so quickly, only to strike their next victim, lowering the rate at which these crimes occur. To help enforce this solution, the police force would also have to be examined; a police force free of corruption and working towards a more just and safe environment would cause the transition to be smoother. The likelihood of this proposed solution being implemented and successful is very low as corruption stems from the highest of those in power and orders are only passed down, through a third party forcing the implementation of the proposed solution may have more success.
