Doing The Right Thing In Toni Morrison's Beloved

Everyone deserves a chance even if they can't say they want one. The world is so cruel that sometimes people do wrong things for the right reassons and for the people they love. In the novel Beloved by Toni Morrison a woman named Sethe killed a baby girl. Sethe was a colored woman who had children that were endangered to becoming slaves and then decided she should kill her youngest baby, Beloved. Sethe was a good woman and did not want to kill her children, but she thought it was the right thing for her kids knowing how bad slavery could be. Sethe still thought it was for best because she said “If I hadn’t have killed her she would have died and that is something I could not bear to happen to her”(Morrison 210). It doesn’t make sense that Sethe would feel that way because at least if the baby had died it wouldn’t be by her hand. Sethe also tried to kill two of her sons, but they lived and they were greatly affected and eventually left the family.. The mother also killed the child so harshly when her sons were bleeding in sawdust. In the book it says “ She simply swung the baby toward the wall planks”(Morrison 157). One daughter however remained and her name was Denver and she was affected by the killing as well as the two boys. The reason is Denver was shy and all the neighbors and people in the town didn’t like their family and avoided her family. In the end made Denver really self conscious about herself and felt like no one liked her. Sethe didn’t have the right because it affected everyone in the family mentally, physically, and emotionally including herself.
