To begin, this clip demonstrates motivation by definition as the coach acts as an external force that produces a behavior in his team that is of high intensity and in a positive direction to perform in the game. Given that the movie only addresses the following game, I cannot speak about how the coach influenced the persistence of the team’s behavior. Also, although the players have been motivated in the past, they were rather unmotivated before the speech so I would say the coach also initiated the motivated behavior. The coach promotes achievement motivation by encouraging the team to persist in the possible face of failure in both football and life but also demonstrates competitiveness when he explains what would make the difference between winning and losing.
The type of goal sought after by the coach is performance based as he wants his whole team to come together and play for one another. He also has an outcome goal when he talks about winning and losing. Ultimately though, he strives for his team to fight for and with one another which would most closely resemble a performance goal.
The coach implies that his team must have an internal locus of control in order to succeed. He explains that ”it’s the guy who’s willing to die” who will be successful and excludes any external factors from his speech. He also says that he cannot do it for them and that they will need to take matters into their own hands which reinforces an internal locus of control.
Additionally, he makes the goals small and achievable by implying that inch by inch the team will find success rather than saying that they need to go out and simply win the
