Kids are the future of the world, and education allows us to teach them the things they need to be successful . However, there has been debate if education even allows them to be successful. Does education empower us? Or does it stifle personal growth? Questions like this should be asked to figure out if the education kids are receiving are allowing them to reach their maximum potential, or holding them back.
Horace Mann is a graduate of Brown University in 1819, where he pursued a career in law and politics, and eventually became president of the Massachusetts State Senate. But, he left the senate and became secretary of the Massachusetts Board of Education due to his despise for the condition the state’s public schools were in. John Taylor Gatto’s thought on education differs from Mann’s idea that schooling is the source of success. Gatto believes schooling is unnecessary, and hinders the growth of kids. He states “We have been taught in this country to think of ‘success’ as synonymous with, or at least dependent upon, ‘schooling,’ but historically that isn 't true in either an intellectual or a financial sense” ( 144). Gatto supports his statement by referring to well known Americans, such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln, that“were not products of a school system, and not one of them was ever ‘graduated’ from a secondary school (143). Historical facts are not easily countered and appeal to the reader’s logic. This works in Gatto’s favor because he is trying to convince a very large audience of varying opinions and educations to see his point of view. He questions the credibility of the current school system by comparing it to the education of historical American figures such as George Washington and Thomas Edison. He then goes onto argue the real goal of the system using figures and historical precedent - mainly the Prussianization of the school system. He supposes that he can bring out the best qualities in children by giving them the autonomy to make decisions and manage themselves, rather than confining them to school. The Quality of a child’s education often either limits or opens up a world of opportunities. Those who study the purpose of public education and the way it is distributed throughout society can often identify clear correlations between social class and the type of education a student receives. It is generally known by society that wealthy families obtain the best opportunities money can buy. Education is a tool of intellectual and economical empowerment and since the quality of education is strongly influenced by social class, a smaller portion of the American population obtains the opportunities acquired from a top notch education. Many people believe that educational inequalities are perpetuated from the interests of specific classes, but some researchers like John Gatto believe that there are even stronger social forces in play.
