Documentary Analysis: The Four Babies

In the documentary Babies, filmmakers follow the lives of four babies in their first year all across the world. Each baby portrayed comes from a different region of the world, which lets the viewer see and experience the different forms of child rearing, development and practices and how they vary across different cultures. The four babies represented are Ponijao from Opuwo, Namibia, Mari from Tokyo, Japan, Bayar from Bayanchandmachi, Mongolia, and Hattie from San Francisco, California. Throughout the documentary there is no form of narration, which allows the viewer to solely focus on the babies and their interactions with the world around them. We, as viewers, are able to see and experience the development of these children physically, cognitively and socially during their first year of life. Though the way these babies are brought up in their culture are different, the similarities of development is constant throughout the four different babies. Even though their environments were different, this is one of the most important similarities and progresses throughout the film. The development of the baby’s cognitive skills such as the information they process, their intelligence, reasoning and other skills are portrayed all throughout the film. Even though each baby's environment is different, each are shown to interact in the world they are brought up in. Mari and Hattie who came from bigger and more industrialized cities had more “objects” such as toys to play with, as well as access to baby classes which helped more with this sector of development, while the two babies Bayar and Ponijao surroundings was based off of what really was surrounding them: nature, sticks, rocks and
