Throughout history, humans have proven that they are essentially bad. William Golding also provides examples of this in his novel, Lord of the Flies. I believe that humans are evil because they disrespect those that are different and they enslave others. William Golding’s novel Lord of the Flies shows that humans are evil because those that are different, are disrespected. In the book, the character named Piggy is constantly bullied even though he is the smartest one there. Piggy is different than the other children on the island because he is chubby, has glasses, and has asthma. Jack is the main bully. Anytime that Piggy made a suggestion or had the conch, Jack told him to shut up; “Shut up, Piggy!” (Golding 15) was a common phrase of Jack’s. At first, Ralph is the leader of the boys and he is fair ruler. Then, Jack begins to come to power; he isn’t so fair. He is extremely violent and mean to the other boys. When he is the new leader, most of the children decide to follow him and not Ralph. With his power, Jack makes his follower do a ton of work, bring things to him, and listen to his rules but doesn’t do anything for the boys in return. He is also very rude and violent towards them. Golding’s view that society is essentially cruel can be seen throughout history. For example, blacks used to be segregated and discriminated. Even though slavery was no longer legal, African Americans were still mistreated. In the early 1900’s, there were separate schools for blacks and whites. Blacks and whites also had separate drinking fountains, pools, busses, and several other places. It was very common to see a sign that said “Whites only”. Jack is the leader of the boys choir group in civilization and he is the complete opposite of Ralph. Jack wants to be leader and won’t let anyone stand in his way he rules through fear and shows signs of militarism and dictatorship. At the opening of the novel, Ralph and Jack get on extremely well. We are informed Jack, “shared his burden,” and there was an, “invisible light of friendship,” between the two boys. Jack changes considerably throughout this novel. At first he tells us, “I agree with Ralph we’ve got to have rules and obey them,” This shows us that at the beginning of the novel, just like Ralph, he wants to uphold a civilised society. We are also notified, “Most powerfully there was the conch.” As the conch represents democracy we can see that at the beginning of the novel the boys sustain a powerful democratic society.

At many points throughout Lord of the Flies, Golding writes for the characters to become gradually more and more evil. This attribute even reaches the symbols of goodness and order, such as Ralph. Once, when Ralph and Piggy go to the feast on Jack's beach, they begin to meld with the others and their evil ways. "Piggy and Ralph, under the threat of the sky, found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society" (Golding 138). This really only proves their common longing for a place with others, not any depth of evilness.

With Ralph's understanding of the need for order and rules, he improves the condition where the boys are living in. Jack's condition was horrible. Also, Jack treated the boys very badly and like he better. Ralph, on the other hand treated the boys all equally and with respect. Ralph's priority to get off the island shows his wisdom and ability to make good decisions. Although Jack was popular on the island for the short amount of time the boys were there, he would not have been popular for much longer. He does not have any of the qualities that a good leader should have and turned himself and the rest of the boys into complete losers. Jack's plan would have soon faded but if Ralph had become leader, his wisdom would last much longer.
William Golding implies that peoples reasons for evil, regardless of whether they were born with cruelty or their situation brought it out is greatly affected by the way they are treated by parents, social situation, fear, and chaos. Fear can be brought out by not having parents, or having parents treat them badly. The issue at stake is children and their upbringing or current situation, effecting and more so flawing their behavior.

Jack shouted “Who cares?” Ralph exclaims “Because the rules are the only thing we’ve got!” ( pg 91) Ralph was the one who tried to keep everyone together and Jack did every thing to turn the other boys away from Ralph. There were times when Ralph almost when to the dark side.
Ralph shows that he has a better understanding of the boys than Jack. He knows that the boys need some sort of order on the island in order for them to survive. He starts a simple form of government and sets a few rules for them. Even though they don’t last very long, the fact that he tried to help the group is what makes him a better leader. Ralph’s wisdom and ability to look toward the future also has an advantage over Jack. He has a sense to keep his focus on getting off the island. When the fire goes out, Ralph gets upset because the chance to be rescued was gone as well. Ralph enforces his role of leadership as he gives the boys a sense of stability of an authority figure. He keeps the boys in pretty good order at the meeting by making a rule that they can only speak if they have the conch. Ralph knows that the littleuns are afraid and they need shelter to feel more secure. They work together for a while, but as the time goes on the smaller boys want to go play. They slowly lose all their help until Simon and Ralph are the only ones left to work on them. Ralph knows that this is a necessity and keeps bringing it up at the meetings. Jack, on the other hand, is doing nothing but causing chaos.
In Society today children are picked on a lot more than the children in earlier times. Children today are bullied in many ways; some of these ways are not relatable to Lord of The Flies due to the technology that has been developed. This type of bullying is referred to as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is where people are bullied over the internet, phones, and apps that are not in person. Another type of bullying is verbal. When someone is verbally bullying you they are talking down on you, and calling you names. Piggy experiences this a lot in Lord of The Flies when Jack keeps calling him Piggy even though that is not his name “Piggy shut up”.
Jack was also at play in all this not just Ralph. Jack was an arrogant boy, but also tried to be civil and keep everything together, hunt, and, survive in the beginning. But then realized that getting saved might not be an opportunity for them. For example Jack split up his choir and hunted. Also kept the fire going but then left the fire unattended to go catch a pig with all of the group, Jack fought with Ralph because he was the leader and Jack wasn't. Then Ralph was “telling everyone what to do”. He was trying to keep everything together. Jack thought he should have been leader, so Jack left the group and started his own tribe.
Under Jack's rule, the boys become uncivilized savages. They have no discipline. Ralph, however, keeps the boys under order through the meetings which he holds. At these meetings a sense of order is instilled because the boys have to wait until they hold the conch to speak. When Ralph says, "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking." (Golding 36) he enforces his role of leader by making rules and gives the boys the stability of an authority figure, mainly himself. By doing this he wins the boys respect and confidence in his leadership abilities. Ralph uses his authority to try to improve the boys' society.
