This article by the authors Shawn Ginwright and Julio Cammarota talks about the discrimination among young people. They explain how some public policy describe youth as delinquents, criminals and also as the main causes of the majority of civil problems. They explain that people tend to express about young people in certain types of ways because of the way some youth act. These policy refer particularly to youth of color as a menace to society. Those stereotypes toward young people, especially toward people of color, can be something related to racism. But the causes of why youth act the way they act is because of the issues that they have, including identity, racism, sexism, police brutality, and poverty along with unfair economic policies. This positive youth development model is planning on create programs and policy that support young people and give them good opportunities for their development. Also, this youth development model have acknowledge the capacity that young people have of changing their communities while developing important life skills. Social and community forces affect young people, but youth themselves need to make a change for a better community.

Moreover, the authors explain how James Galbarino argued that violence and poverty in urban communities creates “social toxins”, this is a term used to describe how social world is poison for a person’s well-being. Galbarino compared social toxins with physical toxins. He said that those toxins might include violence, poverty, domestic and sexual abuse, family disruption and racism.
