Abstract
In today’s world, digital technology changes so quickly and merges into our society at a speed; it’s so difficult to follow and to keep up with it, let alone reflect on how it has affected our lives. Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and texting are examples of these social-digital technologies that people have become so addicted to, especially teenagers. These teenagers are so called “digital natives”, where they live in the era of an advanced technology. Imagine back in the days where everyone had to mail or used telegram, and where there was only one type of phone that they only had it at home. Text messaging eliminates the use of social interactions in non-verbal communication. In non-verbal communication or face to face interactions, messages are being delivered through several different approaches; facial expression, eye contact, gestures, body orientation, proximity and paralinguistic. Facial expression shows how a message is being received through a smile or a frown. Facial expression also expresses happiness, sadness, anger and fear. Eye contact plays an important role in non-verbal communication; it conveys interests, attraction or hostility. Gestures insert warmth and connectedness. Deliberate movements and signals are an important way to communicate any meaning without words. Body orientation is how a person sends the message, in a shy or confident way. It is believed to be far more subtle and less authoritative. Proximity is the distance between the talkers or personal space. The amount of distance we need and the amount of space we perceive are influenced by some factors such as social norms, cultural expectations, personal characteristics and the sense of familiarity. And last, paralinguistic is the voice of the speaker. When words are said in a strong or hesitant tone, listeners might feel persuaded while in hesitant tone, they might …show more content…

It’s becoming a common occurrence nowadays to see people call and text from their devices in the midst of driving. Consequently, texting while driving has been the major cause of road accidents. It’s true that texting is one of the many form or social media that people use to interact with one another and also a better and quicker medium to get what they want to say, especially in an emergency moment. Thus, drivers become distracted because their attention is focused elsewhere and moreover, lose control with their surrounding. For example, something as simple as an animal running out in front of their car can cause a serious damage to the vehicle and potentially can hit another car. According to Mary Madden, a senior research specialist in “Adult and Cell Phone Distractions (2010), she conducted a research on adults and teens who text while they are on behind their wheel. The result was, half of the American adults (49%) said they have been passengers in a car with their drivers on the phone. And, 44% of them who said that they have been passengers in a car when the driver used their phone in a way that their life and others
