The birth of the Internet on our planet has driven humanity into a whole new world of instant communication and all around human connectivity. What used to be cute about your cat that only the friends who came over saw can now be shown to a million other feline lovers in less than a second, and your political views can also be discussed in the comment section as a bonus! But of course such a public and accessible information disperser will not go about simply being for the average Joe; just like with the TV or Newspapers, governments and political parties were bound to get their hands on such a massively used monster. In this essay I aim to discuss all the benefits and pitfalls of digital activism providing corresponding examples, and then conclude with my opinion on the matter. However, it has to be noted that even though I am required to bring forward cases to study and discuss, depending on solely that to provide an argument for or against digital activism is faulty and will only lead to biased reasoning and loss of the true meaning of the movements in question (Joyce, 2010). In fact, I will try to study each example of a social movement very objectively, concluding whether or not it succeeded in reaching its goal through relevant metrics. These names are very logically explained, because they represent all the stances people could possibly take on any matter that requires opinion: they either support a certain standpoint because they see it’s positive potential (optimists), reject or criticize the standpoint because they don’t see the positives (or frankly see negatives) of it (pessimists), or they simply don’t care nor see how this movement or standpoint has made any change in our society worth discussing
