“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever” is a young adult novel by Jeff Kinney. Cabin Fever follows the all of the troubles of a kid named Greg Heffley so he can earn money for Christmas gifts, But bad luck came his way and a massive blizzard sets in. When you start the book Thanksgiving basically just passed, and Greg is panicked about being good for Santa Claus after his mom talks about an elf she made when she was a little kid watches you to see if you're bad or not. Greg has been addicted to playing a game called Net Critterz on the computer where you take care of a virtual pet. (which is a chihuahua in this case.) Greg needs money to buy his computer pet Chihuahua stuff, but his mom but his mom refuses to give him any money. The mom says that Greg will have to earn his own money to buy gifts for his siblings this year. In the book “Hideout” by Watt Key, Sam, the main character, lives a nice, relaxed life of video games and playing around his house by the river in Mississippi. But, one day after being humiliated by a school fight, Sam decides to venture off into the forested swamp in his boat and discovers a mysterious boy living in a shack named Davey. They become friends and from there, Sam’s easy and relaxed life ends and the problems begin- as Sam is not allowed to go to the swamp but the strange idea of Davey living in the swamp makes Sam want to visit him more.
Each and every person will go through a coming of age experience sometime in their life. Those experiences can come in different forms. But, each coming of age experience ends up shaping us to become a mature adult. In the book, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee tells a coming of age story through Scout Finch, an aging girl’s point of view. Her brother, Jem Finch who experiences coming of age before Scout, realizes that being an adult was not what he hoped. Jem recognizes a different perspective of bravery from Mrs.Dubose, a vile, elderly woman’s perspective. Greg values his independence over conforming to what others want him to be, although he feels a tremendous amount of pressure from his family. When Greg asks Sharlene, “Do you think I’m nothing? Do you think you’re nothing?” he demonstrates that he does not want to be what society deems as successful. He does not want a job like a doctor or lawyer, but instead, wants to stand up for a cause he believes in and do what he thinks is right. In a way, it is ironic that Greg is going to school to become a lawyer, yet he protests against the government. Protesting is a way Greg shows his independence to his father, it is a way that he knows he is in control and he can advocate for a something he believes in, instead of doing what he is told. Greg’s confidence suffers after being yelled at by his father for deciding to drop out of university. “Is that all my family can ever do? Point out what’s wrong with me?” Greg says to Sharlene as she follows him out of the house, which shows how he feels that his entire family is against him, but despite the fact that he does not do what his father wants he still leaves the house positive. When Greg’s principal home saying that he was most likely to not pass math is father had a talk with him, “ Greg sat in the small, pale green kitchen listening, knowing the lecture would end with his father saying he couldn’t play ball with the Scorpions.” This made Greg very sad causing him to go for a walk when he broke into the house where he met Lemond Brown and he encountered some new things such as the neighborhood thugs. “They banged around noisily, calling for the rag man. “We heard you talking about your treasure.” The voice was slurred. “We just want to see it, that’s all.” “You sure he’s here?” One voice seemed to come from the room with the sofa. “Yeah, he stays here every night.” “There’s another room over there; I’m going to take a look. You got that flashlight?” “Yeah, here, take the pipe too.” Greg opened his mouth to quiet the sound of his breath as he sucked it in uneasily. I never thought that I would read a book over the summer, but over the course of these past two months, that changed. Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” forever changed how I view slavery. I loved reading it. Throughout the whole novel, Stowe uses her experience and knowledge to portray the terrible hardships and struggles that slaves endured everyday. Not only does this book express the thoughts of the slaves and their faith in God, but also of the people around them. “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” wanted so badly for America to give freedom and equality for all people, and that is what I enjoyed most while reading.
Scout the narrator of the book, goes to school on the first day of school and her teacher Miss Caroline scolds her for being able to read! She has been told that her daddy and Calpurnia are not suppose to be teaching her that stuff and she is not allowed to read or write at home anymore. This is just one of the many ways that shows one of the many themes, education takes place at home and in the community, not only in school that is portrayed throughout the book “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee. I chose to write a thank you letter because it seem to fit my writing style. This fits my skills because I’m not a big writing person and this feels like it was the easiest for me to do. The easiest part about writing a letter is knowing the characters well enough that you can talk about their personality and how they have impacted Maycomb. The most challenging part is going to be citing the story at least 3 times because I’m not going to know exactly where a character said something or remembering an episode. This project will help me with improving my skills by learning how to write a more complex letter and with higher level words.
