Personal Response: I really enjoyed the book Old Yeller. I really understood the book and could relate to a boy and his dog. The book kept me reading until it was over.
Plot: The book took place in the 1860’s in Texas. Jim Coates is off for the summer doing a cattle drive. He left Travis his oldest son in charge of the house. The day after his dad left, Travis went into the dog run and got some meat but a dog was in there. It was a big yellow dog and ate a bunch of the meat. Travis’s mom let his little brother Arliss keep the dog. One day Arliss and the dog were by the stream playing in the water and a she bear and her cub were there. Old Yeller saved Arliss from the she bear. From then on Travis and Old Yeller had a special bond. Old Yeller
Old Dan is a special character in the book because he couldn't leave without his sister Little Ann. He wouldn't go with Billy or anyone unless he went with his sister. The novel, ‘Jasper Jones’, is set in a small country town in outback Australia in the 1960’s. The setting was influenced by novels that Silvey, the author had read as a youth. Such as To Kill A Mocking Bird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. people from this same hot desert climate and who have a decent knowledge of past events and times can really get into the book, as you can see the different perspectives of each character living in that time and place.

Recommendation: I would absolutely recommend this story to a friend. I think this story was very likeable and make people share feeling with Bruno. When he climbed under the fence I was very nervous for Bruno. This book can change many peoples feelings and have them keep their eyes on the book. This is why I would recommend this book to a friend who is at least 10-11 years old.

I read the book Braving the Fire. It takes place in the year 1863. The book is about a 15 year old boy from Maryland named Jem Bridwell. He lives on a farm with his father, grandfather, and their slaves. Because Maryland was a “border state” during the civil war, it was not considered part of the Confederacy, although most of the people living in Maryland at the time were for the Confederates. Jem’s father, Tom Bridwell, on the other hand had joined the Union Army because he believed in freeing the slaves and keeping the Union. James Bridwell, Jem’s grandfather, was completely against Tom’s being in the Union Army and the Union itself.
This particular book was based on a small slave family in Cincinnati, Ohio after the American Civil War (Deck). Seven people lived in the small house at 124 Bluestone Road (Morrison 2). The 3 in the address is missing because the third child out of the four children is dead. The seven people that live in the house were: Sethe, Halle, Denver, one of the daughters of Sethe and Halle, Baby Suggs, Beloved, who was murdered by her mother when she was only two years of age, Howard and Buglar, who were the sons of Sethe and Halle (Morrison 2).
Cowboys, Indians, gunfights, cattle, stealing, prostitutes, alcohol, deserts, plains, and horses: Where can all these be found? Only in the Wild West. The days when the West was once the newest frontier have been preserved forever due to the many novels and movies written about them. The stories from the west are full of action, packed with battles between cowboys and Indians, and adventures of tracking down pistoleros (bandits, gunman). They are also full of drama, cowboys who have fallen in love with prostitutes, finding long-lost loved ones, and the pains of growing up in hopes of being a cowboy. All of this action can be found in one Western novel, Lonesome Dove, by Larry McMurtry. One theme, however, stands out from the rest of them. The theme of growing up and maturing is a predominant theme in the book Lonesome Dove. Newt, the young stable hand, is finally maturing and is looking to his leaders, Augustus 'Gus' McCrae, Captain Woodrow F. Call, and other assorted cow hands such as Dish Bogget, Joshua Deets, and Jake Spoon for advice and tips in life. After being born to a prostitute mother, who died, Newt was raised by the Hat Creek Outfit. This outfit is like the Bad News Bears. It is a ragtag group serving no real purpose other than to steal horses from Mexican bandits and then sell them to travelers who happen to stop by the desolate town of Lonesome Dove. This is a very harsh environment for Newt to grow up in. Newt is constantly looking for a companion and friend, and at the very least someone to talk to. The main character is developed over the text. In the book the main character is a dog named Buddy, who is reborn as Molly, who is reborn as Max, who is reborn as Toby, who is the ending incarnation of the dog. When the book starts Buddy is an older dog who is a big labrador sort of dog. “The fur on my legs was as black as the rest of me, but down at my paws it had, over time, become tinged with white.”(pg 1) Shows that he was an older dog, because when dogs grow older their hair turns gray, like a humans. He is a brave, kind dog. “I could see he was going to step on the baby. I was afraid of the horse….. My instincts were telling me to back up, to get out of there, but Clarity was in danger and I had to do something, something now. I swallowed my fear and barked at that horse with all the fury I possessed. I tightened my lips, showing my teeth, and lunged forward, putting myself between Clarity and Troy….. I backed up, still barking, pushing Clarity into the corner with my hips.”(pg 22 & 23) This shows that Buddy knew that the horse could hurt him, but he wasn’t going to back away because that would leave the baby in harms way, he was brave enough to protect her even though he was afraid. The next form of “him” is Molly (a female), a poodle mix. She is a little confuse at first as to why she is reborn, but soon realizes she has to take care of CJ (clarity in her teens, no longer a baby). She is very compassionate about CJ, and knows that she is extremely important to her. “Later the back gate clanged and Rocky and I tore over to see who it might be, and there she was. We both jumped up on her and I finally growled at Rocky for acting as if he was as important to her as I was.” This shows that Molly knows she is i...
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a book that I read in last summer. I like this book because I like this type of books. I can call this book as an adventurous book. In this book, every scene makes me very excited. The words and the sentences in the book can make me really feel like I am one of the characters and experience what they are experiencing.
The book began in a small coffee shop. Zach was sitting at a corner table waiting for his mother to pick him up when two boys with guns burst in and told everyone to stay calm. The boys went straight to the cashier and told the girl to give them all of the money. While the boys were at the cash register Zach saw that a lady parked in a blue car called someone, then drove away. As the cashier was shoving the cash into bags that the boys had handed her, the cops rolled up so the boys made everyone go in the back storage room. There were nine hostages, Zach, two middle aged businessmen, a mother and daughter, the cashier and the coffee boy, and two older ladies who smelled like soap.
