Chapter 6: Devilish Happenings in Loftus Hall Loftus Hall is located on the Hook peninsula in Wexford and even today, it is a lonely spot. Imagine how it would have been like in the olden times, with no electricity. Without electric lights, the different rooms had to depend on gas lamps and candles for their dim, flickering lights. Add to it the fact that very few people visited the place or even passed by that area. The wind would have moaned and groaned on a chilly, winter night making it a perfect setting for hauntings. Here, the ghost of a young girl, Ann Tottenham is found by visitors. Ann has a fascinating life story that is almost like a fairy tale. Her father, Charles Tottenham carved a name for himself for riding to Dublin and heading to the House of Parliament in mud-spattered clothes and boots to record his casting vote against a measure that would have put the …show more content…

After Charles’s wife died and one of his daughters Elizabeth had married and left the house, he remarried. The woman, true to the stepmothers we read about in stories, was cruel and took an instant dislike for Ann. She forbade Ann from inviting any of her friends to the house and she was restricted to spend a very lonely existence in the Loftus Hall house. The Wexford coast is known to be one of the most dangerous stretches of water near the Irish coast. Many ships, especially in the olden days, often grounded on the shore or shattered near the rocks close to the coast. It wasn’t unusual for survivors of the ship to seek shelter in the houses near the shore. One such traveler came knocking at the door of Loftus Hall seeking shelter. He was invited in and proved to be an interesting character that he was asked to stay for a few more days. Ann and the young man fell in love with each other during that brief period. They often had long chats in the tapestry room. He asked Charles for Ann’s hand in marriage but was refused and asked to
