Depression is the number one killer among those who commit suicide. Between 60% and 90% of these people who have taken their life had either depression or bipolar disorder. But what causes people to decide to commit such a dangerous and life-altering decision? Some say technology or gender but others say it’s because of wealth. Depression is a sad emotional disease of the brain that is due to a chemical imbalance of the brain caused by excessive stress or a major loss. Facts A person is considered depressed by experiencing feelings of hopelessness and sadness but is different than a case of feeling sad or “the blues” (Gianoulis, 2015) because the sadness lasts longer than the average person would take to deal with their “blues.” About a third …show more content…
Unfortunately there are still humps to overcome. If those currently enlisted in the military see a mental-health doctor, many fear being demoted or being let go from their job if their illness becomes known. This is unfortunate because the longer someone goes without treatment, the worse their condition will get. Many clinicians treat depression by talking through what the patient is experiencing. Therapists teach patients “to examine one’s thoughts regarding a situation to figure out whether the thoughts accompanying the emotion are accurate if what you believe is actually true and the next step is to figure out what to do about the situation” (Clemmitt, 2009). The key is to get patients to continue using the skills they have learned from their therapist. Each drug works differently for every person. Over time, patients will usually find a drug that works well for them. Prozac is one of the most widely known and advertised brand depression medications with 24 million people taking it in over 100 countries after being on the market for only ten years in …show more content…
Tricyclics: imipramine, desipramine, amitriptyline, nortriptyline, and doxepin, have been found successful in controlling melancholic depression. Unfortunately they’re known for side effects including rapid heart rate (fight-or-flight response), sweating, dry mouth, constipation, and urinary retention. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI’s) include phenelzine, isocarboxazid, nialamide, and tranylcypromine that show to be more effective in alieving non-classical symptoms of depression. These MAOI’s are more problematic when it comes to interactions with other drugs like alcohol, anesthetics, tricyclics, and food containing tyramine. In the 1980’s, antidepressants became more mainstream when SSRI’s first came of the market. SSRI’s or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most widely known depression drugs that increase brain levels of serotonin (neurotransmitter linked to mood). Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft are highly effective medications relieving major depression symptoms as well as chronic depression. SSRIs have fewer adverse side effects, which increase their popularity. The drug’s more serious side effects include dangerous allergic reactions, panic attacks, aggressive behavior, and reduced sexual drive or difficulty having
A 38-year-old single woman, Gracie, was referred for treatment of depressed mood. She spoke of being stressed out due to conflicts at work, and took a bunch of unknown pills. She reported feeling a little depressed prior to this event following having ovarian surgery and other glandular medical problems. She appeared mildly anxious and agitated. She is frequently tearful, but says she does not have any significant sleep or appetite disturbance. She does, however, endorse occasional suicidal ideation, but no perceptual disturbances and her thoughts are logical and goal-directed.
Treating depressive and bipolar disorders with antidepressants remains a popular option in clinical practice. Most clinicians choose the drug or class of drugs, usually selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRI's, that is most effective and best tolerated with fewer severe side effects. These drugs are beneficial because they specifically target serotonin-based areas of the brain without affecting other neurotransmitter systems. SSRI's largely replaced tricyclic antidepressants which work by blocking the absorption (reuptake) of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, thereby increasing the levels of these two neurotransmitters in the brain. Tricyclic antidepressants present severe side effects and thus are usually only used when other treatments have failed. If SSRI's or tricyclics are not effective Monoamine oxidase inhibitors may be prescribed. MAOI's, enhance tyramine to increase norepinephrine and serotonin. While taking MAOI's you must abstain from foods and alcohol that contain tyramine such as, yogurt, aged cheese, and substances such as cold medications. This is because a potential toxic reaction could occur. Additionally, other antidepressants may be utilized such as Wellbutrin (bupropion) an NDRI-
Antidepressants are FDA approved drugs given to patients to alleviate symptoms, most commonly anxiety and depression. There are many people who are skeptical about the use of these drugs and if they really work as a benefit toward the people taking them. There are many pros to taking the medications, but there are also cons. This is why users of these drugs have to be aware of the side effects in order to get the full use of the medicine. Research shows that the benefits of antidepressants outweigh the negative long term effects, but only if they are taken in moderation.
Antidepressants are usually a type of drug called SSRIs. SSRI stands for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The most popular antidepressants such as Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, Lexapro and Luvox are all SSRIs (Antidepressant Medications for Children and Adolescents). Many newer antidepressants are SSRIs due to less side effects and more safe for adults compared to other older generations of antidepressants. Children and teens on the other hand are not. In fact, the FDA put a black box warning on SSRIs which “is the most serious type of warning in prescription drug labeling” ( Antidepressant Medications for Children and Adolescents). There’s actually only one SSRI that can be prescribed for depressed children (who must be eight and older) which is Prozac and That hasn’t prevented SSRIs ...
Prozac: Fluoxetine Many people, both those who have experienced the illness and families and friends that have helped loved ones cope with it, are familiar with the far reaching effects of depression. Depression is one of the most common medical conditions in United States and around the world. At some point in their lives one in four, approx 18 million, Americans will experience some episode of depression. For people struggling with depression there is help available.
Bipolar Disorder can be classified by the occurrence of manic episodes followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes. A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, extensive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy, lasting at least 1 week and present most of the day, nearly every day. During the specific period of mood disturbance and increased energy or activity, many symptoms are present. Some examples of these symptoms can include: -Inflated self-esteem or grandiosity, decreased need for sleep, and are more talkative than usual (“Bipolar and Related Disorders, “n.d.). There is a 10- 15% risk of completed suicide associated with Bipolar Disorder (“Bipolar Depression”, 2)
This paper introduces a 35-year-old female who is exhibiting signs of sadness, lack of interest in daily activities and suicidal tendencies. She has no interest in hobbies, which have been very important to her in the past. Her lack of ambition and her suicidal tendencies are causing great concern for her family members. She is also exhibiting signs of hypersomnia, which will put her in dangerous situations if left untreated. The family has great concern about her leaving the hospital at this time, fearing that she may be a danger to herself. A treatment plan and ethical considerations will be discussed.
Antidepressant are a form of pharmacotherapy treatment developed to treat the symptoms of major depression. Antidepressants are used for many other types of conditions including anxiety disorders, obsessive compulsive disorder, dysthymia, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, and substance abuse, pain syndromes, gastrointestional disorders. Antidepressants usually require several weeks to notice significant effects. There are no antidepressants or any medication that is completely free of adverse effects. This article explains that the adverse effects of antidepressant can decrease compliance and slow down the rate of recovery. It is important for one to take note of potential side-effects before choosing the best antidepressant to suit their personalized needs. Statistics show that about 28 percent of patients sto...
One out of every 20 Americans will become depressed this year. This is obviously a very major and serious problem. St. John’s Wort’s main ingredient, hypericin, is what appears to help alleviate mild to moderate depression, although not much is known about whether or not it proves helpful in severe depression. Hypericin is the red pigment of the plant and it seems to inhibit monoamine oxidase (MAO) and the breakdown of the brain’s neurotransmitters and is also a SRI, serotonin reuptake inhibitor. However, according to Jean Carper in Miracle Cures, “recent research finds hypericin less potent an antidepressant than the whole plant extract itself, suggesting the herb’s complex mixture of chemicals, including xanthones and flavonoids, also are critical in the plant’s pharmacological benefits”.
Regardless of the person whether male or female who has developed the symptoms of depression, their lives have been invaded by a sickness that can have a devastating effect on their lives; depending on how severe their symptoms are. If left untreated the end result could have an even more devastating effect. Luckily, there are treatments available that are successful.
Zoloft was first introduced to the United States in 1980’s. Another name for Zoloft is sertraline and is in a group of antidepressants called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. At first Zoloft was made to treat major depressive disorder, but as the drug progressed over time it can now treat panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Zoloft is the most commonly used antidepressant because it works extremely well, it is safe, and its side effects are not as serious as other antidepressants.
Depression is a mental illness, which affects millions of Americans each year. Currently there are many prescription drugs, called anti-depressants that have been proven to successfully treat it. The causes of depression are somewhat of a medical enigma, however, it is known that depression is associated with a change in the brains chemistry involving the function of neurotransmitters (Reichert). This chemical change occurs in healthy brain’s, which experience sadness, but ends after the unpleasant stimulus is removed. In people suffering from depression this chemical change does not correspond to any particular stimulus. Symptoms of depression are often incapacitating and include severe and extended sadness, feelings of worthlessness, feelings of emptiness, irritability and anxiety (Reichert, Spake).
Depression is the major cause of suicidal thoughts and ideas. After a long enough period of time, people become worn down and become less and less happy. Depression can affect anyone, rich, poor, young, old, race, or religion (D-1). Depression is a medical condition dealing with the functioning of brain chemicals and emotions, that make any person susceptible. Common causes of depression include death, romance, divorce, or moving (D-2).
Depression is very common around the world today; millions of people are diagnosed with depression every year in America. There are many effects of this disease, some more serious than others. Depression can be linked to many different events that happen to a person to make them moderately to severely depressed. This disease can be very dangerous and sometimes fatal depending on how bad it is. However, some people think that depressed and suicidal people never show signs of their intention when, in general, they give off MANY signs that people tend to notice after the death.
“Depression is a condition in which a person feels discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated or disinterested in life in general. When these feelings last for a short period of time, it may be a case of "the blues"” (Understanding the Facts), but when such feelings last for more than two weeks and when the feelings interfere with daily activities it is likely that you may be in a major depressive state.
