Beyoncé once famously exclaimed in her 2006 triple platinum song “Irreplaceable”, “To the left, to the left, everything you own in the box to the left”. Despite astonishingly high rates of voter loyalty, the Democratic Party has been unable to solve many of the issues faced by the African-American Community. Issues such as wealth inequality and mass incarceration have gone largely unaddressed. Much to the dismay of the American pop culture mogul and Democratic strategists alike, the African-American Community should de-align from the Democratic Party and become swing voters. By becoming less attached to one party, the issues facing the African American Community could help reshape policy platforms as Republicans see the community’s vote as more attainable, and Democrats lose the ability to pay lip service to issues without delivering pay-dirt.

One in fifteen African American children have at least one parent in prison, resulting in higher high school dropout rates, higher poverty rates, and a greater likelihood that they will end up going to prison themselves. Incarcerating those suspected of having committed drug related crimes is financially incentivized by the government, with localities receiving upwards of 80% of the possessions of those who are imprisoned. It is also estimated that if the state decided to reduce the incarceration rates to pre-crime crusade levels that over a million jobs would be lost.
