Eugene Delacroix Versus Georges Seurat According to Dictionary.com, Art History is known as the study of the history and development of the visual arts. Art history has dated back all the way to the 19th century but has been recognized since ancient times. Art history has been developed with the help of many brilliant artists, some of the most well known being Picasso and Van Gogh. Two artists that have been less recognized but still significantly stand out are Eugene Delacroix and Georges Seurat. Specifically, these two artists both practiced the form of art that we know as Impressionism. In fact, Delacroix had a huge impact on some of Seurat’s artwork. Impressionism began in 1874 when, “a group of artists called the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Printmakers, etc. organized an exhibition in Paris that launched the movement called Impressionism” (metmuseum.org). Impressionism is unique in the way that bright colors are used as well as the intense brush strokes. Scenes of rural areas were also very common within Impressionism due to many artists from Paris who painted the artwork.
