Deforestation
By: Eunbin Jennifer Cho
The world’s natural resources are depleting as the humans exploit and abuse these precious assets. Deforestation is occurring on a daily basis as the humans are cutting down the trees in mass quantities. The number of trees available in the world are limited and can become scarce at any point. As the population increases, the need for the wood from the trees becomes more necessary. As time passes, an abundant amount of people become more dependent on the supply of trees, especially in the Amazon Rainforest. The effect of deforestation of the species living in the area, how the population impacts the diminution of trees, and the sustainable solutions all make up the present and future of deforestation.

For example, millions of people rely directly on the world’s rainforests, through small-scale agriculture, hunting and gathering, and by harvesting forest products, such as wood and lumber from the trees in the rainforest. Also, the demand for natural resources from the rainforests causes illegal logging, which occurs around the world, and in some places, illegal logging is more common than the legal variety. The logs made through this are sold to factories where they mass produce objects such as school supplies, pencils, and more products that the growing population demands. The destruction of the rainforests threatens some of the world’s most famous and valuable rainforests. The growing population results in the decline of the valuable and precious rainforest, The important element that is vital to human life is oxygen and according to National Geographic, “Forests cover 31% of the land area on our planet and they produce vital oxygen and provide homes for people and wildlife.” As the increasing population uses up the limited natural resources in the world, erosion becomes a problem from deforestation. For instance, according to Live Science, “Scientists have estimated that a third of the world’s arable land has been lost through soil erosion and other types of degradation since 1960. And as fertile soil washes away, agricultural producers move on, clearing more forest and continuing the cycle of soil loss.” This proves that deforestation that is occurring because of the growing population, damages the land by causing erosion to happen. Because of the erosion created by deforestation, the level of land and soil degrades and the food production in the area decreases and the growing population has less food. Deforestation accelerates rates of soil erosion, by increasing runoff and reducing the protection of the
